Gulf Coast Youth Soccer Club (GCYSC), a 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization based in Southeast Texas, is accepting applications for a full-time Director of Coaching and Methodology position. GCYSC is a full-service club providing Competitive, Academy, and Recreational levels of play for boys and girls ages 3-18. We are a growing and continuously improving club with a well-maintained 34-acre complex. We seek a DOC with a strong background in player, coach, and club development to oversee all soccer-related activities to build upon the foundation in place and help lead us into the next phase of improvement and growth. The DOC position is full-time, year-round with future opportunities for advancement. We are looking for a good fit for our club and someone who wants to make a home here and be a part of the community long term. The DOC directly supervises all club coaches and reports to the Executive Director.
The Ideal Candidate:
The Director of Coaching is a leadership position that serves as the club’s technical leader, providing strategic oversight on all technical matters, including but not limited to player pathways, player development, recruitment, and staff and club development. The ideal candidate will have experience managing and leading people toward the achievement of organizational objectives and performance goals, especially in the areas of player and coach development to achieve club success. The ideal candidate is/can:
- Innovative and can envision, develop, and implement modern ideas for improving and expanding an established Game Model (style of play), accompanying curriculum and training methodology, and coaching education to create an optimal player development environment for player, team, and club success in a full-service club setting.
- Create an environment where serious players want to play to maximize their potential; recruit and retain players such that all club programs are full and successful at all levels and the experience that players and families have is positive and appreciated.
- Will possess strong leadership, organizational, decision-making, and time management skills; able to create workflow processes, delegate, and implement initiatives, and oversee and manage people.
- Will know the numbers that drive the club daily, including retention, program performance, and the effectiveness of the clubs technical strategies and player pathway.
- Relationship-centered with excellent parent management skills, able to maintain collaborative relationships with parents, staff, board, and surrounding community.
- Strong verbal, listening, and written communication skills; able to resolve conflict in a professional manner; can conceptualize ideas and communicate them to players, coaches, and parents.
- Have a growth mindset, able to work as part of a team and in their own initiative; strong teaching, and motivational skills, and dedicated to continuous improvement themselves and those around them.
- He/she can collaborate with and manage others and lead them to the achievement of common goals; work collaboratively with different constituents to build excitement and gain buy-in; is passionate about the sport for both male and female soccer development.
- Ability, and comfortable with, working with multiple supervisory and/or collaborative bodies including the Board of Directors, US Youth, South Texas YSA, US Club and associations, and league management personnel.
Essential Job Functions
- Methodology and Philosophy: Improve/expand upon an established Game Model (philosophy/style of play) the club has invested in that is rooted in attacking, possession-with-a-purpose, and positional play style of soccer as a core principle that is fun and educational to play, aesthetically pleasing to watch and is documented and clearly articulated throughout the club.
- The game model should provide a “how-to” guide in terms of how we will play and train our teams: it's our 'style of play' or DNA and it determines what our player development methodology, syllabus, seasonal curriculum, and session plans look like.
- The game model and training methodology shall be planned and progressively implemented in an age-appropriate manner throughout the club from the youngest to the oldest ages with a specific focus on the Academy and Competitive programs.
- The game model and training methodology should not vary greatly in principle or theme from one age group to the next, but rather includes key principles and sub-principles in each moment of the game that progresses from the very basic to more advances as players and teams mature. The intent is not for every player or team to be a cookie-cutter replica, but rather that players are being consistently taught to play the game in a similar way that encourages reading the game, decision making and successful skill execution so they will be more flexible and adaptable for the higher playing levels they ultimately ascend to.
- The DOC is responsible for ensuring that all coaches are trained in the game model and training methodology through year-round coaching education and mentoring.
- Establishes a curriculum and training methodology for the club’s recreational program to be overseen and implemented by a Recreational Director and supported by in-house coaching education events.
- Player Development: Improve/expand upon an established player-centric educational framework and player development curriculum and training methodology to achieve club-wide goals and a consistent game model (playing style). The DOC will:
- Create an engaging player, coach, and team training environment where players can maximize their potential in all key pillars of the game (technical, tactical, physical, and psychological).
- Consistently develop players who are skillful on the ball, intelligent, and can play within the club’s game model and who can ascend to higher levels of play (State or National league, ODP, Id2, etc.) as they mature.
- Create training methodologies that encourage awareness, reading the game, decision making, movement, skill execution, and speed of play.
- Positively balance the value of competition with the perspective of long-term learning and development for the players, coaches, and parents.
- Plan, organize, promote, and implement evaluations/tryouts, team formation and rosters, and training schedules for Academy and Competitive teams.
- Create a player evaluation criterion that ensures players are placed properly on teams.
- Create a personal Player Development Plan (PDP) for each player in the Academy and Competitive program and educate coaches, and oversee implementation.
- Create a college placement program that includes annual player and parent orientation events, college nights, and guest speakers on the college recruitment process.
- Observe and monitor club training sessions a minimum of 3-4 days per week (in season), mentoring coaches to ensure they are proficient in delivering the club’s training
- Observe teams and coaches on game days and mentor coaches and teams to ensure they are consistent with the club game model.
- Prepares and encourages players to engage in regional player development programs including ODP, Id2, or similar, and promotes this pathway within the club.
- Staff Development: Builds and maintains a strong and qualified coaching staff for the club at all levels by creating an environment where coaches are challenged, developed, and recognized for their abilities and commitment to the club’s vision, culture, goals, and player development. The DOC will:
- Have a strong soccer background and coaching education expertise to lead our coaching.
- Develops a coaching organizational structure that includes leaders and specialists in key focus areas i.e. Grassroots (Recreational), Foundation (U6-U10 Academy), Formation (U11-U14 Competitive) and Pre-College (U15-U19 Competitive), Goalkeeping, Technical Skills, Fitness/Nutrition, and College Placement.
- Plan and conduct internal and external professional development opportunities for coaches of all levels within the club.
- Work with all coaches to ensure they understand the club’s game model, training methodology, and can effectively execute the training curriculum.
- Provide semi-annual written evaluations to the professional coaching
- Culture: We believe that individual and collective team behaviors, values, standards, and expectations are the foundation of maintaining a healthy and sustainable club culture, member satisfaction, and player and coach retention. The DOC leads this inititative:
- Assists in the development of a club-wide culture to ensure stakeholders and the community understand who we are, why we are here, how we all benefit and achieve mutual and sustainable success together.
- Ensures that the club’s vision, mission, and core values are reflected in the behavior of the staff, players, and parents.
- Off-field and Administration Responsibilities: The DOC will be responsible for all aspects of player and coaching development and oversee soccer activities club-wide. Non-soccer activities such as club administration, operations, and facility maintenance, will primarily be handled by others to allow the DOC to focus their attention and efforts on strategic soccer decisions, program improvements, and implementation that benefit players, parents, and coaches the most. However, it is paramount that the DOC, Board, and Operations staff work collectively and collaboratively to develop, maintain, and execute the club’s overall vision, culture, and strategic Off-seasons will be used for larger or long-term infrastructure improvement efforts that cannot be done in season. Off-field responsibilities include:
- Advise and assist in the implementation of a club vision to achieve short and long-term success and sustainability.
- Advise and assist in maintaining a budget for coaching, training, and equipment for inclusion in the club’s annual budget process.
- Advise and assist in implementing the club’s strategic plan.
- Keep all player and coach development documents current.
- Review each program annually for continuous improvement needs and opportunities.
- Oversee and help run the clubs’ two annual tournaments.
- Assist the club to increase registration levels for all programs in the
- Lead the design and implementation of a parent education program, meetings and handouts.
- Assist promoting the club within the community, with schools, youth or civic organizations.
- Plan, organize and implement any assigned process or infrastructure development projects that are applicable to the DOC position (i.e. documentation, guides, process, that improve players, coaches and the club).
- Attend the monthly Board and give a monthly technical report to the club.
Desired Characteristics, Skills, and Qualifications
- Proven experience of technical leadership in a youth soccer club environment.
- USSF “A/B” license (or equivalent UEFA or NSCAA Advanced National Diploma) is preferred or the desire to acquire them in the next 1-3 years.
- 5-10-years coaching experience; willingness to continue coaching education through formal licensing such as US Soccer, UEFA, USC and/or supplemental methodology courses such as TOVO Academy, APFC, or LaLiga Methodology or similar.
- Professional or collegiate playing experience is preferred or extensive coaching experience at elite club, college, or pro level.
- Experience in leading and delivering coaching education.
- Collaborative approach to supporting and empowering staff and coaches for success.
- Experience in multitasking, adept at addressing multiple challenges simultaneously.
- Effective problem-solving skills, particularly in high stress environment.
- Experience managing people, including in a coaching and club and club environment.
- Strong customer service skills for handling disputes and treating family members with care and respect.
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required.
- Strong public speaking skills: ability to speak to coaches, parents, or community groups to help promote the club's vision and goals.
- An ability to set goals and attain them in the time set forth by yourself and the club.
- This is a full-time position that includes office hours as well as field hours year-round.
- Must be willing to interact with parents, board members, and the community about the club, our player development philosophy and methodology, and how they will benefit.
- Proficient use of email, social media, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Sports Session Planner, and club management software such as GotSport, Demosphere, or similar.

- English speaking, Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus with our large hispanic population.
