The Mabie Law Library at the University of California, Davis School of Law seeks applicants for the position of Head of Public Services. This position will supervise four reference librarians and oversee library services and programs pertaining to reference, research, instruction, and marketing and outreach. The Head will play a key role in developing, implementing, and monitoring updates and innovations to services and initiatives in all the above areas, in active coordination with library colleagues, law faculty and student groups, and other departments at the School of Law and beyond. The Head will also have opportunities to develop and teach credit-bearing legal research courses at the School of Law, such as Advanced Legal Research. This position reports to the Law Library Director.
Responsibilities: - In close consultation with the Director, develops and implements strategic planning for reference, research, instruction, and outreach to ensure effective services and programs;
- Hires, trains, supervises, and mentors four reference librarians, and oversees law student library research assistant recruitment and staffing;
- Manages day-to-day reference operations, including coordinating desk shifts and overseeing related policies & procedures, technologies, and services for diverse user groups;
- Participates in a regular reference desk rotation and provides high-quality in-person and virtual reference assistance and research consultations;
- Manages the library's faculty liaison program and provides significant and specialized research assistance to law faculty;
- Oversees the planning and development of and participates in the library's instructional programs, including: specialized library workshops, guest lectures in School of Law courses (including 1L Legal Research and Writing), and presentations to School of Law clinics, centers, and student journals;
- Oversees the creation and maintenance of educational and informational materials, including LibGuides and relevant website content;
- Coordinates the development and delivery of tailored outreach and communication about the library to law faculty, law students, members of the campus community, and other library users;
- Manages the planning and delivery of library tours, orientations, and special events;
- Coordinates the collection of reference and instruction-related library statistics;
- Participates in collection development activity;
- Participates on special Law Library and School of Law projects and committees as assigned;
- Keeps abreast of academic law library trends, developments, and emerging technologies relevant to effectively managing the unit and ensuring responsive, up-to-date services and procedures;
- Other duties as assigned.
Initial work hours are on-site, Monday - Friday from 8 am - 5 pm, with regular in-person reference desk shifts. Following a short probationary period, librarians are eligible for hybrid or other flexible work arrangements subject to supervisor approval and operational needs. Some evening or weekend shifts may be required.
Appointment rank and salary will be based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience. This position is not covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
Librarians earn two vacation days per month and one sick day per month, and have access to generous retirement, medical, dental, vision and other benefits. In addition, there are thirteen university holidays. Relocation assistance may be available. The Law Library covers core fees for librarian membership in the Northern California Association of Law Libraries (NOCALL) and the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL), as well as the cost of membership in one AALL Special Interest Section (SIS). The library also provides funding to assist with travel to appropriate professional conferences.
UC professional librarians are academic appointees. Candidates for appointment to the UC Librarian series shall have a professional background of competence, knowledge, and experience suitable for appointment. To advance in the series, librarians are evaluated based on professional competence and quality of service within the Library, in addition to at least one or more of the following: professional activity outside of the Library, university and public service, or research and other creative activity.
Proposed start date: Negotiable, but no earlier than July 1, 2024.
