Position Overview:

The Mabie Law Library at the University of California, Davis School of Law seeks applicants for the position of Head of Public Services. This position will supervise four reference librarians and oversee library services and programs pertaining to reference, research, instruction, and marketing and outreach. The Head will play a key role in developing, implementing, and monitoring updates and innovations to services and initiatives in all the above areas, in active coordination with library colleagues, law faculty and student groups, and other departments at the School of Law and beyond. The Head will also have opportunities to develop and teach credit-bearing legal research courses at the School of Law, such as Advanced Legal Research. This position reports to the Law Library Director.

Responsibilities:
Initial work hours are on-site, Monday - Friday from 8 am - 5 pm, with regular in-person reference desk shifts. Following a short probationary period, librarians are eligible for hybrid or other flexible work arrangements subject to supervisor approval and operational needs. Some evening or weekend shifts may be required.

Appointment rank and salary will be based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience. This position is not covered by a collective bargaining agreement.

Librarians earn two vacation days per month and one sick day per month, and have access to generous retirement, medical, dental, vision and other benefits. In addition, there are thirteen university holidays. Relocation assistance may be available. The Law Library covers core fees for librarian membership in the Northern California Association of Law Libraries (NOCALL) and the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL), as well as the cost of membership in one AALL Special Interest Section (SIS). The library also provides funding to assist with travel to appropriate professional conferences.

UC professional librarians are academic appointees. Candidates for appointment to the UC Librarian series shall have a professional background of competence, knowledge, and experience suitable for appointment. To advance in the series, librarians are evaluated based on professional competence and quality of service within the Library, in addition to at least one or more of the following: professional activity outside of the Library, university and public service, or research and other creative activity.

Proposed start date: Negotiable, but no earlier than July 1, 2024.

The Mabie Law Library is an integral part of the UC Davis School of Law, and provides services that support the teaching, research, and scholarship of its students and faculty. We also serve members of the UC Davis community, members of the legal community, and the public. The Law Library's physical spaces and personnel are housed in King Hall on the Davis campus. The Law Library has a collection of over 400,000 volumes and volume equivalents and access to a wide range of electronic databases provided through its library licenses, main campus, and UC-wide license agreements.
