Overview:

Northern Illinois University ( NIU ) is a student-centered, nationally recognized public research university, with expertise that benefits its region and spans the globe in a wide variety of fields, including the sciences, humanities, arts, business, engineering, education, health and law. We are inviting applications for a full-time, twelve-month position of Associate Dean for Academic Affairs ( ADAA ) at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the College of Health and Human Sciences ( CHHS ). CHHS is home to five academic schools: Allied Health and Communicative Disorders, Family and Consumer Sciences, Health Studies, Interdisciplinary Health Professions, and Nursing. Collectively, these schools house 23 programs, three clinics and a Child Development and Family Center and partner with over 900 external practicum sites. Through an impressive array of programs, CHHS prepares scholars, leaders and practitioners who enhance the lives of individuals, families and communities across the lifespan.

DeKalb is a diverse and growing community providing residents with a small-town feel and the benefits of a large university. Located in a peri-urban region adjacent to the Chicago metropolitan area, NIU faculty and students live in communities throughout the western Chicago suburbs, city of Rockford and other small towns within driving distance throughout northern IL. The recently revitalized downtown city of DeKalb offers shops, restaurants, and amenities, and business investment is evident in DeKalb's Chicago West Business park whose residents include companies such as Facebook/Meta, Ferrara Candy and Kraft/Heinz .

Position Summary:

The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs ( ADAA ) supports the College of Health and Human Sciences ( CHHS ) by providing oversight of student services, curriculum, clinical education, and accreditation. The ADAA will positively contribute to the missions of the college, university, and community. We seek leaders who embrace NIU's mission of providing opportunity to a diverse student body by providing them with access to high quality education and hands-on involvement in research and community engagement as well as supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion across collaborations and interactions with faculty, staff, and others throughout the university and external community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Student Services

• Develop and support efforts to recruit a diverse student body for the College, including underrepresented and first-generation college students
• Foster a sense of belonging through student engagement initiatives, events, and activities that celebrate diversity
• Oversee CHHS Academic Advising and Pre-Health Program
• Support Northeast Illinois Area Health Education Center and pursue and support other student-centered grant opportunities
• Promote, and when relevant, coordinate the application and selection process for College and affiliate organizations scholarships
• Oversee academic dismissal and reinstatement procedures
• Facilitate resolutions for student concerns and serve as dean's designee for student grievances

General College Administration

• Serve as an ex-officio member of CHHS Senate and College Council
• Serve on other College and University committees as relevant
• Serve in the absence of the dean for functions related to academic affairs
• Supervise administrative aide and the directors of academic advising and pre-health programs
• Perform other duties as assigned

Accreditation and Assessment

• Coordinate and approve submissions for annual assessment updates, mid-cycle assessment reviews, and program reviews
• Support units with state and external accreditation annual reports, self-studies, and site visits

Curriculum

• Coordinate CHHS Curriculum Committee and serve as a member of the curricular deans group
• Oversee creation, approval, and dissolution of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, minors, certificates, and nondegree offerings
• Coordinate updates of the Undergraduate and Graduate catalogs
• Approve CHHS Contract major plans and independent study credits
• Oversee degree completion programs, including review of operations
• Facilitate articulation and partnership agreements with community colleges and external agencies
• Encourage curricular and co-curricular collaboration across programs, schools, and colleges

Clinical Affiliate Agreements and Requirements

• Oversee execution of clinical affiliate agreements
• Serve as a liaison between external agencies and University legal counsel for agreement edits or alternate agreement approvals
• Evaluate and utilize data management platform(s) for the reporting of clinical requirements
• Oversee policies related to clinical requirements
• Coordinate communication and remediation of clinical requirements

• Eligibility for tenure and rank of associate professor in one of the CHHS schools
• Three years of higher education administrative experience at the rank of program director or higher
