Junior/Assistant Specialist - Leach Lab Position Overview: A reasonable estimate for this position is $51,300/year for Step 1 and $54,700/year for Step 2 for Junior Specialist exempt, $24.57 hourly for Step 1 and $26.20 hourly for Step 2 for Junior Specialist non-exempt
$59,800-$66,200/year for Assistant Specialist exempt,, and $28.64-$31.71 hourly for Assistant Specialist non-exempt.
The Leach lab at UC Davis Health School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, an academic/clinical department, encompassing several sub-specialties, is seeking a (Junior/Assistant) Specialist to contribute to an array of projects aimed at improving musculoskeletal health.
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery invites applications from qualified candidates for a (Junior/Assistant) Specialist position (full-time or part-time) in orthopaedic research. The Specialist will assist with research projects involving the development of engineered approaches to restore and regenerate lost bone, muscle, and cartilage. We use an array of tools including stem and progenitor cells from mice to humans, biomaterials, drug delivery, mechanical testing, and histological analysis of regenerated tissues. Our long-term goal is to develop strategies to prevent and reverse musculoskeletal injuries and disease.
The Leach lab offers an inclusive, multidisciplinary, and collaborative work environment. Currently, the lab is composed of one postdoctoral fellow, eight graduate students, and six undergraduate researchers. We frequently engage multiple clinicians in support of our projects. We strive to conduct cutting edge research at the forefront of orthopaedic research. We also encourage and offer full mentoring support for grad/med school applications.
Junior Specialist Duties: - Responsible for coordinating regular everyday lab operations and performing assays that contribute to ongoing research projects throughout the laboratory.
- Assist laboratory members in the preparation and analysis of stem cell populations, executing planned experiments, analyzing data, and supporting the projects of others.
- Assist multiple projects and must manage time efficiently in doing so.
- Work independently under general guidance from the PI/postdocs/grad students and must have the ability to recognize irregularities in experimental results and modify experiments as needed.
- Order supplies and prepare some reagents for use by other members of the lab and will train new researchers in basic protocols and analyses.
- Multiple basic techniques and skills are desired and include: cell culture, techniques of molecular biology, flow cytometry, qPCR and RNA extraction, working with biomaterials, ability to follow detailed protocols and keep accurate notes, and a careful attention to detail.
- Depending on the experience and time, Junior Specialist may be able to develop and maintain independent projects.
Assistant Specialist Duties: - Responsible for coordinating regular everyday lab operations and performing assays that contribute to ongoing research projects throughout the laboratory.
- Assist laboratory members in the preparation and analysis of stem cell populations, executing planned experiments, analyzing data, and supporting the projects of others.
- Assist multiple projects and must manage time efficiently in doing so.
- Work independently under general guidance from the PI/postdocs/grad students and must have the ability to recognize irregularities in experimental results and modify experiments as needed.
- Order supplies and prepare some reagents for use by other members of the lab and will train new researchers in basic protocols and analyses.
- Multiple basic techniques and skills are desired and include: cell culture, techniques of molecular biology, flow cytometry, qPCR and RNA extraction, working with biomaterials, small animal handling, ability to follow detailed protocols and keep accurate notes, and a careful attention to detail.
- Learn and apply the latest methodologies, including single cell RNA-sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, in vitro and in vivo assays of tissue formation.
- May attend and present at major scientific conferences as well as significantly contribute to publications as an author.
- Assistant Specialist will be able to develop and maintain independent projects.
The resulting hire will be at the Junior/Assistant rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.
The incumbent will work under the direction of Dr. Kent Leach.
POSITION DESCRIPTION Research in Specialized Areas (90% effort)- Participate in research projects involving involving the development of engineered approaches to restore and regenerate lost bone, muscle, and cartilage.
Professional Competence and Activity (8%)- Participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations.
- Review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to area of expertise.
University and Public Service (2% effort)- May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various industry organizations, state and federal agencies, and other external groups on issues related to area of expertise.
- Participate in activities of committees within the department, college, campus and other University entities, as appropriate.
