Position description

The Fire Ecology Lab, under the guidance of Professor Scott Stephens, with the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, & Management (ESPM) within the Rausser College of Natural Resources (RCNR) at the University of California, Berkeley, is seeking highly motivated individuals for the position of Associate or Full Specialist.

The Fire Ecology Lab is a group of scholars who share an interest in understanding forest ecosystems in terms of their ecology, management, and policy. Robust, quantitative field studies form the core of our approach. Specifically, we want to know how and why forests change. Answering these questions is more than just an interesting academic puzzle. We expand the scope of our field-based insights by collaborating with a diverse group of ecosystem scientists, remote sensing experts, and data scientists to develop scientifically robust and management relevant information. Specifically, we work with scientists, managers and policy makers in California to develop the best available information to reduce the vulnerability of our forests, firefighters, and communities to the risks of high severity wildfire. We conduct work to support the joint federal and state effort to collectively treat 1 million acres per year to reduce wildfire hazard and improve landscape resilience across California. The Fire Ecology Lab is one of 20 labs across California that share their collective expertise by serving on the Cal Fire Science Advisory Panel.

Examples of the research questions our lab is helping to answer include: (a) What are the ecological and social trade-offs underlying California's "Million Acre Strategy"? (b) How do we measure and quantify the effects of landscape and stand scale fuel reduction and forest restoration treatments? (c) What are resilient forests and how can they be described quantitively?

The expectation is that this position will support the collective scientific contributions of the Fire Ecology Lab.

Specific responsibilities include:
  1. The specialist will work with the scientists, managers, and policymakers trying to answer the questions regarding trade-offs and efficacy of landscape and stand level fuel and restoration treatments.
  2. The specialist will contribute to the Fire Ecology Lab's efforts to provide science advice to Berkeley Forests.
  3. The specialist will contribute to reports and publications produced by the Fire Ecology Lab.
  4. The specialist will contribute to presentations, workshops, and public meetings delivered in person and online by the Fire Ecology Lab.
  5. The specialist will conduct quantitative analyses, literature reviews, and scholarly syntheses that inform forest management and policy in California and beyond.
  6. The specialist will support the logistical and administrative efforts associated with the Fire Ecology Lab's data archiving.
Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Master's degree or equivalent international degree.

Preferred qualifications
Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., ecology, forestry, fire science, ecosystem science, or geography) plus 3 years of experience in forest ecology/management/policy or PhD Degree or international equivalent in a relevant field (e.g., ecology, forestry, fire science, ecosystem science, or geography) plus two years of experience in forest ecology/management/policy.

Demonstrated expertise in the analysis of wildfire- and forest-related data (statistical and/or geospatial). Evidence of strong written communication ability. Prior experience working in fire prone landscapes. Experience working in multi-institution collaborations
