Job description

Sierra Lobo, offers customers a full range of professional and technical capabilities, including Test and Evaluation, Systems Engineering, and Advanced Technologies. We also develop products and processes related to Cryogenic Fluid and Thermal Management Systems, Densified Propellant Management Systems, and Prototype Extreme Pressure and Temperature Systems. Our customers include the Department of Defense (DoD), the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, Missile Defense Agency (MDA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

 

This position will be located at NASA’s Ames Research Center.

Performs stationary engineering duties required for safe operation of test facilities and equipment using microprocessor-based control systems. Communicates with test section engineers in attaining test operation parameters. Coordinates closely with Test/Project Engineers and/or Facility Operators to schedule and implement operations and repairs.

Operate and maintain facility/plant machinery, test equipment, lubrication, and cooling systems, drive systems and high-pressure oil and air systems in support of the Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel Facility. Work involves handling of specialized test hardware. Work involves both a combination of computer-based operations and hands on field maintenance and repairs using a variety of hand and power tools. Duties and responsibilities include, operate bench board computer-based control systems, hands on facility retrofits and general maintenance of systems.

Establish safe plans of action prior to performing work to mitigate and eliminate potential hazards, work in a cross functional team environment able to read prints and facility drawings. 

Work in support locations of the main facility including High Pressure Air Plant, Auxiliary Pumping Plants, Model Prep Rooms, Sting Assembly Room, Blade Shop sanding aluminum blades, and Tunnel Test Sections. 

Ability to pass a physical, maintain a California driver license, and operate industrial machinery. General supervisory guidance received from Supervisor with support of Leadmen providing field direction, work under established policies and procedures, work within a CBA workforce. 

Essential Functions of the Job

Unusual or Special Physical Requirements of Position 
Ability to perform work in confined spaces. Ability to install, operate, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical systems. Ability to learn and operate plant equipment using computer based modern control systems. Ability to lift a maximum of 50 lbs.

Description of Work Environment 
Stationary operations work consists of plant equipment operation from a computer control console via keyboard and monitor. Field work can be inside and outside. Field work may bring individual into close proximity to extreme high or low temperatures, high noise levels, high-speed rotating machinery, working in confined spaces, working at heights, and systems containing high potential energy.

Equipment and Machines Involved in Work Tasks 
Large mechanical systems equipment, such as large high pressure air compressors, lubrication and cooling pumps and motors, water and air control valves, cooling tower fans, large AC induction motors, large centrifugal compressor, gearboxes, vacuum pumps, etc. Ability to drive a Gradall, Manlift, Forklifts, Scissor Lifts and Bridge Cranes.

Criticality of Attendance 
Standard work week of 40 hours. Occasional overtime during regular days and some weekends may be required. 2nd and 3rd shift work required at times.

Other Essential Functions 
Must be able to identify and mitigate work hazards. Must use safe work practices and work safely and without injury or incident. Must work well in a team environment and have good interpersonal skills. Must have the ability to obtain a security clearance if required by client. Must be able to accurately communicate ideas verbally and in writing. Must be able to obtain a NASA badge and maintain access to the workplace facility. Adhere to appropriate safety, quality, and environmental practice, as well as business ethics practices. Perform other duties as required. 

Salary Range: $51.97/Hour

High school diploma, trade school related experience. Three to five years’ experience in operation, installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of large mechanical systems.
