Located fifteen minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Mill Valley, Mount Tamalpais School (MTS) is a k-8 co-educational independent day school serving ~270 students.

The Opportunities
With a new strategic plan and recent successes in growing the diversity of our student and professional communities, MTS is poised to further realize our commitment to inclusion, equity and belonging (IEB) in an increasingly diverse community. The new Director of Inclusion will:
Guide Much of the Work of the Into Action Strategic Plan
IEB is woven throughout our five-year strategic plan, approved in March 2022. The Into Action Strategic Plan is centered around four Habits of Excellence with thirteen Strategic Priorities. The Director will partner with the Head of School, Board, and Administration to ensure we realize the following five Strategic Priorities:
- Infuse our curriculum with a more diverse range of voices, perspectives, and experiences that enrich the learning for all, while being seen, heard, and valued.
- Build and nourish a broader student and family community that is diverse in identity and culture.
- Attract and retain a more diverse professional community who possess expertise in both what they teach and who they teach, and who appreciate the process of learning and child development as much as the outcome.
- Regularly provide students with opportunities to actively engage in culturally conscious learning to build empathy and develop responsibility to others and their communities.
- Ensure all families have access – financial and otherwise – to the full breadth and depth of the MTS experience.
Deepen IEB Work While Broadening Its Leadership
Effective IEB practices shine in numerous areas of our program, pedagogy, operations, and leadership. There is great room for growth, though, both in the execution more broadly as well as the distributed leadership of IEB work. The new Director has the opportunity to:
- Leverage existing talent while developing the IEB skills of all MTS educators.
- Partner with Division Heads and teachers to develop a robust IEB scope and sequence
- Establish a distributive leadership framework so more members of our professional community are engaged in leading this important work.
Partner with School Leaders
The new Director will be an essential partner to all members of school leadership. They will collaborate closely with:
- The Head of School to lead the Board Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee
- The Lower School and Middle School Division Heads to
- Advance curriculum development and pedagogy with an IEB lens
- Recruit and retain a more diverse professional community
- Support students and families from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds
- The Director of Admissions and Marketing to engage families from diverse backgrounds, review applications, and provide training on implicit bias
The Position
Leadership
- Serves on the school’s administrative team, helping to ensure a successful year and the realization of our Into Action Strategic Plan
- Acts as a resource for the entire administrative team to integrate best practices in IEB into our stewardship of the School
- Partners with the Head of School and Board DEI Committee to support IEB efforts at the Board level
Faculty/Curriculum Development and Support
- Works with the Division Heads to ensure that the school’s curriculum reflects the diversity of our local and global communities
- Partners with the Division Heads to develop the culturally responsive pedagogy of all ProComm members
- Develops and coordinates ongoing professional community professional development related to IEB, including in-service days and off-campus professional development in partnership with the Division Heads and Head of School
- Leads the school’s participation in the annual People of Color Conference
- Coaches and mentors specific faculty on topics of IEB and culturally responsive pedagogy in consultation with Division Heads
- Is an available resource and support to ProComm members of underrepresented identities
School Programs
- Leads and organizes IEB-related events and assemblies such as CONNECT, All-School Gather, and related special days
- Teaches an IEB-centered elective in middle school (1 class per week)
- Co-teaches lessons or units in partnership with faculty members to support their professional growth
Recruiting, Networking, and Hiring
- Works closely with the Admin team and Head of School toward the goal of recruiting from a more diverse candidate pool for the school’s faculty, staff, and administration positions
- Interview all candidates for full-time employees
- Partners with Division Heads or Hiring Managers as well as Lead Mentor in the onboarding process of new employees
- Maintains relationships and collaborates within a network of IEB professional organizations and practitioners as a source of professional development and resource-building
Student & Family Support
- Is a visible member of the school’s leadership team at school events
- Trains and mentors faculty and staff in the most effective ways to support students, meeting with students 1:1 if needed
- Supports families of underrepresented identities through formal events and on an ad hoc basis
- Partners with Admin Team to provide parent education related to IEB topics
Admissions, Advancement, and Communications
- Works in partnership with Director of Admissions and Marketing to fulfill the mission of the school in the areas of admissions and marketing
- Attends and assists in the planning of admissions events including tours as requested by the Director of Admissions and Marketing
- Sits on admissions committees and the financial assistance committee
- Supports the Director of Advancement in IEB-related topics
- Collaborates with the Director of Communication to ensure our published materials align with IEB goals
The Successful Candidate
The Director of Inclusion leads across numerous school constituencies. To this end they must:
- Have a demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion work and remain on the leading edge of IEB work by attending relevant professional development and maintaining active participation in both regional and national diversity organizations
- Be proactive and strategic – lead, motivate, and inspire others
- Lead with love - warm, approachable, collaborative
- Effectively engage a wide range of constituents – connecting meaningfully with both students and adults
- Be a dynamic and strong public speaker
- Have a proven capacity to build rapport across diverse stakeholder groups
- Excel at strategy and action – Set clear goals and execute effectively to achieve those goals
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve goals
- Network with IEB Directors at Bay Area Independent Schools and represent the school at local, regional, and national multicultural events as determined, in conjunction with the Head of School.

Pay Range
Salary will be determined by education and years of experience and will range from $130,000-165,000.

About Mount Tamalpais School
Mount Tamalpais School, 100 Harvard Ave, Mill Valley, CA 94941 (Telephone 415-383-9434), is a coeducational day school enrolling children in Kindergarten through Grade 8. The suburban community of Mill Valley is 12 miles north of San Francisco in Marin County. Students have access to the museums, theater, opera, symphony, and ballet of the city, and visit the Pacific Ocean and Mount Tamalpais for hiking and nature study.
