DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe assistant director will equitably provide curricular opportunities for students to engage with connected learning experiences that enhance learning, civic leadership, career aspirations, and equity competencies. The team has an assessment plan by which they measure and communicate impact. Specific responsibilities include:
Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) Course and Program Support
- Supervise and support the CEL Program Manager in the quarterly course-matching process by reviewing course schedules to identify potential CEL courses, conducting outreach to faculty and partners, and recruiting student placements.
- Provide administrative support for CEL courses, including coordinating partner-faculty meetings, tracking required student paperwork, and facilitating orientations.
- Develop and consistently track metrics for CEL engagement, assessing distribution of courses and enrollment numbers to identify curricular or demographic gaps.
- Coordinate with campus units to uniformly implement and/or develop risk management policies.
- Promptly address disciplinary or safety concerns that arise in CEL placements.
- Continuously assess and improve internal course support processes and infrastructure.
- Collaborate with Connected Learning team members to support student programs involving a CEL component (e.g., Latino
- Leadership Initiative, Digital Scholars). Support may include curricular development, securing individual placements, and assisting with recruitment efforts.
- In partnership with the Connected Learning assessment lead, collect, analyze and report a variety of information about CEL to internal and external constituencies.
- Manage CEL budget and contribute to annual budget planning process.
Faculty Engagement and Support
- Serve as a thought partner and resource for faculty in developing CEL courses and assignments.
- Identify and counsel faculty on how to mitigate barriers to CEL participation, especially among student demographics historically underrepresented in higher education and/or majors with lower CEL participation.
- Promote faculty development and disseminate resources through workshops, communities of practice, and a centralized SharePoint site.
- Conduct outreach to faculty and school leadership to better understand institutional needs and practical barriers to implementing course-based CEL.
- Collaborate and coordinate efforts with counterpart offices and community engagement working groups across the tri-campus system.
- Explore internal and external funding avenues to support curricular/co-curricular CEL opportunities.
- Stay abreast of current practices and new developments in the field of community engagement.
Community Partnership Development
- Maintain regular communication with partners via the monthly newsletter, summer site visits, and by attending major partner-sponsored events or networking meetings as appropriate.
- Cultivate new partnerships on and off campus to fill curricular gaps and serve key demographics.
- Provide coaching and resources to help partners effectively co-educate students.
- Develop practices for expressing gratitude to partners for their contributions to UW Bothell (e.g., an annual community partner breakfast, holiday card, UW media stories featuring partners’ work, etc.).
- Represent CEL on campus and in the community by attending events, conducting site visits, and acting as a point of contact for CEL faculty, partners, and students.
Student-Focused, Career-Connected Support
- Coordinate with CEL Program Manager and campus partners (e.g., Career Services) to develop info sessions, orientations, workshops, and other career-connected programming for students participating in CEL courses or programs.
- Advise CEL students as part of the Connected Learning advising team, guiding students through their engagement in CEL experiences from pre-major through graduation.
- Work with the Connected Learning Advisor to publicize and support students in applying for merit scholarships and fellowships relevant to CEL students.
- Regularly update the Connected Huskies experiential learning opportunities database with CEL programs and co-curricular opportunities.
Building Team Capacity
- Supervise the CEL Program Manager.
- Work within a team of professional staff who are responsible for advancing community engaged learning, including global initiatives and undergraduate research and creative projects.
- Work collaboratively with the director of global engagement and assessment to measure the team’s progress towards key performance indicators.
- Work with the CEL Program Manager to hire, train, and support CEL student staff.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Business Administration, Community Development, Social Sciences, American Ethnic Studies, Science and Technology, Health Studies, Interdisciplinary Arts and Humanities, or a related field.
- Minimum four years’ experience in education, research, industry, community engagement, or related field.
- Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Experience successfully mentoring students.
- Knowledge and understanding of issues related to racism and other systems of oppression and ability to translate this knowledge to higher education context.
- Awareness of how actions and words influence people and how situations can perceive as inclusive (or not).
- Success working in a collaborative environment where consultation, flexibility, creativity, and cooperation are essential.
- Ability to appreciate and synthesize information from a wide variety of disciplines.
- Strong management, organization, verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to use basic and some advanced functions of Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook), and web-based forms.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Masters preferred. Knowledge of or experience with any of the following desired:
- Program and student learning assessment.
- Faculty and curriculum development.
- Experience or interest in fundraising, grant writing and seeking external support for the work.
- Community partnership development.
- Interdisciplinary studies.
