Job description

Full/Part Time Status:

Full Time

Position Description:

The Global Health Studies Program at the University of Iowa invites applications for a full-time lecturer position (non-tenure track) for a three-year term. Renewal of contract is based on instructional needs and satisfactory performance. The position will begin August 21, 2024 and carry a 3/4 course load per academic year (9 months), with possible summer teaching if desired. The successful candidate will have ability to teach across multiple Global Health topics, including an introductory survey course in Global Health, an introduction to social science inquiry course, and areas such as global epidemics, bioethics, maternal health, as well as courses in the selected candidate’s area of specialization.

The Global Health Studies Program at the University of Iowa has been a model of interdisciplinary education for over 25 years, drawing students and faculty from multiple departments and colleges. We prioritize collaborative study of real-world health issues to ground our graduates in both the practical and theoretical bases of the complex factors influencing health and disease locally and around the world. Global Health Studies at Iowa was among the first such undergraduate academic programs nationally and remains distinctive by virtue of its liberal arts administrative home, and by its continued commitment to undergraduate education. Being rooted in a broad interdisciplinary base that builds upon the humanities, social sciences and health sciences, the Global Health Studies curriculum helps students understand underlying forces—such as history, culture, gender and sexuality, economics, politics, race and ethnicity, the environment, law, and technology—which lead to health disparities worldwide. Global Health Studies faculty members conduct research at a variety of sites worldwide, including India, Haiti, Colombia, the Caribbean, Germany, and Southeast Asia.

The University of Iowa is a leading public university located in Iowa City, a midsize community and UNESCO City of Literature with a high quality of life. It is the host of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, Hancher Auditorium, and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The city and university are part of a historic campus community offering an array of cultural and athletic activities, including outstanding theatre and music venues, well-recognized art collections, a thriving literary tradition, ethnically diverse restaurants, and a full menu of Big Ten sports. The Iowa City area is often ranked as one of the most livable communities in the nation.

Application Instructions: Application materials should be sent to https://jobs.uiowa.edu and include a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and names and contact information for three professional references. Refer to requisition number 75027. Review of applications will begin January 10, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled, with interviews conducted by Zoom.

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check.

The Global Health Studies Program and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are strongly committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion; the strategic plans of the University and College reflect this commitment.
