Position Summary: The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is seeking a UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Area County Director to provide leadership in support of applied research and outreach programs across Mendocino and Lake counties. Our mission is to engage with communities to bring the resources and expertise of UC directly to Californians through research and education programs that support:

- Facilitate relationships with Tribal communities
Purpose: The Area County Director is responsible for the coordination and overall operation of UCCE programs in cooperation with county governments in Mendocino and Lake Counties. Additionally, this position will work to develop, facilitate and strengthen relationships with the 15 Tribal communities living in the two-county area to support current and future collaboration on issues of local importance.
The Area County Director will bring together UCCE Advisors and Tribal leaders to collectively identify opportunities for collaboration that center Tribal perspectives and uplift Tribal goals, expertise and priorities through the co-implementation of culturally sensitive and appropriate collaborative answers to unique opportunities of Tribal communities.
Responsibilities: - Act as a liaison between UCCE and County Departments, Boards of Supervisors and County Administrative Officers as appropriate
- Serve as a county department head for the University of California Cooperative Extension department in Mendocino and Lake Counties.
- Secure adequate county budgets and resources
- Build relationships and synergies to deploy UCCE research to address county needs
- Supervision of county employees
- Understand and communicate value of UCCE impact to county partners and others
- Oversight and administration of UCCE educational and applied research programs
- Hire and manage personnel
- Provide direction and leadership to UCCE academic and support staff
- Mentor, manage and evaluate academic personnel
- Supervision of UC ANR employees
- Maintain positive working relationships with partnering public and private agencies
- Expand collaborations and funding sources.
- Comply with University of California and county policies.
- Conduct concerted outreach to Tribal communities to learn their priorities and what collaborations could be most useful to them.
- Use the feedback from this outreach to build relationships and partnerships with Tribal communities to build and support collaborative research and extension programs that integrate Indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledge (ITEK), Traditional Agricultural Knowledge (TAK), Tribal input, and western scientific approaches to:
- support Tribal communities in implementing TAK and TEK practices for improved Tribal land and water stewardship relative to fire and other practices to enhance productivity and climate resilience; quality and availability of foods, fibers, and medicines for improved food security, food sovereignty, and positive health outcomes.
- Advance, where appropriate and in close coordination with relevant Tribal communities, policies and programming to support Tribal sovereignty over ancestral lands
- protect cultural resources, increase Tribal and youth engagement in land management, promote more drought and fire resilient communities, and strengthen regional food systems.
The Area Director oversees management of the physical plant and human resources. They will increase the visibility of UCCE through community engagement, including but not limited to, needs assessments, representing UC ANR in local and/or regional initiatives, participation in relevant policy development, and communicating the positive impacts and benefits realized by the citizens and workforce of the local counties, region and state from the activities and contributions of local UCCE programs.
UCCE is administered by the University of California, Division of Agriculture Natural Resources. UCCE brings the knowledge of University of California research through its agriculture, natural resources, youth development and nutrition programs to address local questions and to help solve local problems. UCCE academics, staff, and volunteers live and work in the communities they serve, helping identify, respond to, and resolve local challenges. UC ANR connects Californians to UC, leading the way to science-based solutions.
Location Headquarters: This position will be headquartered Mendocino or Lake County.
This position is a career appointment that is 100% fixed.
Pay Scale: $84,700/year to $123,000/year
