Preferred Qualifications:

·        Degree in a physical or life science, including Industrial Hygiene, Safety Engineering or Environmental Health and Safety
·        Experience with industrial hygiene practices in an industrial, academic, or research setting, including evaluating laboratory hazards, conducting task hazard analysis, and evaluating work practices
·        Experience utilizing databases, especially those related to chemical inventories, exposure monitoring, instrument calibration and maintenance, and service requests
·        Experience developing and conducting in-person, online, and distributed training in a variety of contexts
·        Experience writing and editing reports, manuals, and policies
·        Satisfactory work planning and control experience at a Department of Energy National Laboratory, college/university, or other research laboratories
·        Licensure in one or more of the following:  Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified or Associate Safety Professional (CSP or ASP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Registered Environmental Manager

Job Description:

Ames Laboratory is seeking an Industrial Hygienist I/II to support the Environmental Programs within the Environment, Safety and Health (ESH) department. Ames Laboratory is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funded national laboratory operated through a contractual agreement with Iowa State University (ISU).

The Industrial Hygienist I/II works to prevent occupational illness and disease, assesses workplace occupational health and safety hazards, recommends control measures, supports efforts to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and industry standards of practice, and provides a safe working environment. Under general supervision of the Ames Laboratory Senior Industrial Hygienist, the Industrial Hygienist I/II will provide program support in areas such as sampling, surveys and evaluations, identification of exposure criteria, job hazard analysis, occupational exposure monitoring, chemical inventory management, work planning and control, training, and monitoring. This position will provide increased oversight and rigor to multiple ESH programs, especially in the areas of hazard analysis, work task evaluation, and documentation of safety and radiological systems, leading to improvements in safety culture and reductions in exposure to workplace hazards. The position interacts with Ames Laboratory staff, scientists, students, managers, ISU Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) staff, and DOE personnel.

This individual will provide industrial hygiene support to program elements that implement the Ames Laboratory strategic plan, mission, vision, and goals.

In addition to the duties above, the Industrial Hygienist II will be expected to monitor and revise safety programs, conduct surveys, collect and analyze samples, complete inspections, and evaluate compliance.

Excellent coordination and communication skills are needed to effectively negotiate and appropriately influence the safety behavior of individual lab workers, group leaders, and research lab groups towards better procedures for best management practices.  This position involves multiple tasks and requires the ability to prioritize work, manage time effectively, and identify opportunities to work as efficiently as possible.

Industrial Hygienist I required qualification - Bachelor's degree (PS808)

Industrial Hygienist II required qualifications - Bachelor's degree and 2 years related experience (pay grade PS809)
