Job description

The Blue Springs Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a highly self-motivated professional to oversee Aquatics Recreation Programmer at the new Blue Surf Bay Waterpark and City Aquatic Facilities. 

Blue Springs, MO is a suburb of Kansas City, MO, sitting on the eastern city limits and is a community of approximately 58,603 residents. The Department has been in the process of offering a wide range of community recreation programs as well as revitalizing parks and facilities over the last seven years, investing over $60 million in improvements to current park facilities within the community. In April 2021, residents approved a sales tax dedicated to park improvements, parkland development, and operational subsidy. The measure passed with an 80% yes vote, demonstrating the support the community has for the Parks and Recreation Department and the improvements made over the last seven years to our program offerings and facilities.

The improvements made to our park system include the construction of the much-anticipated Blue Surf Bay Waterpark. Blue Surf Bay Waterpark has been recognized as one of the 10 most anticipated indoor waterparks for 2024. An aquatics facility offering a wide variety of aquatic experiences from waterslides, lazy river, surf simulators and wave ball pool to a Ninjacross course. This addition to the Blue Springs Fieldhouse will add over 30,000 square feet of indoor space and almost 60,000 square feet of outdoor aquatic space. Over the next five years, the department will continue to fund major improvements to its parks and facilities, investing over $50 million to include the construction of a new 50-acre community park and innovative improvements to playgrounds, trails, shelters, athletic fields, and several other park amenities.

Not only has the department seen a revitalization of its park facilities but has seen tremendous growth in our program offerings and participation. The Department offers a comprehensive year-round recreational offering including, Summer Day Camps, Youth Sports, Fitness, Senior Services, Special Events and much more. Some programs have more than doubled over the last three years as the community continues to engage with the Department.

As a Recreation Programmer, responsibilities include: planning, organizing, scheduling, coordinating, and implementing recreational activities, events, and classes; selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating part-time/seasonal staff to support the recreation program area; securing, scheduling, and preparing recreation facilities; preparing promotional program information for distribution; assisting with and monitoring a budget for assigned program area; preparing program evaluations and other related reports; and participating in local, state, and national organizations related to assigned program areas.

The normal work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and requires flexibility to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Special License(s)/Certifications – Bachelor's degree in recreation or leisure administration or related field. Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) status through state and/or national professional organizations preferred. Must possess and maintain valid state driver's license. First Aid and CPR/AED, facility lifeguard aquatic provider certification and/or must be able to obtain AFO or CPO or within 6 months of hire.

Experience – One-year experience in recreation, leisure or related field preferred.

Skills –Skill in effective verbal and written communication; skill in the effective administration of City and Department policies and procedures; skill in the operation of common office machines; skill in evaluating job applicant qualifications and employee performance.
