To cope with the growing volume of healthcare and biomedical data, our faculty, students, and staff explore and create new computational, organizational, and decision-making methods. Our research contributes to the field of semantic technology, biostatistics, and the modeling of biomedical systems, benefiting clinical research, translational research, and patient care.The Musen Lab at Stanford University is currently seeking a dynamic research Software Engineer to contribute to a groundbreaking project for the World Health Organization (WHO). The focus of this endeavor is to adapt WebProtégé, a widely used open-source OWL ontology editor, to facilitate the editing of the next version of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)—a controlled terminology used by every member state of the United Nations.As a Software Engineer in this role, you will play a pivotal part in the design and implementation of both frontend and backend solutions, tailoring WebProtégé to meet the specific needs of the World Health Organization. The scope of this work involves transitioning a complex monolithic web application into a contemporary microservices-based system and adding new services to meet the specific needs of the WHO. Ideally you will possess expertise in microservices and, preferably, Spring Boot. Duties include: Conceptualize design, implement, and develop solutions for complex system/programs independently.Work with a variety of users to gain information, and develop intra-system tradeoffs between different users, as necessary; interact with a diverse client base and outside vendor contacts.Document system builds and application configurations; maintain and update documentation as needed.Provide technical analysis, design, development, conversion, and implementation work.Work as a project leader, as needed, for projects of moderate complexity. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working collaboratively on research projects, preferably at an institution of higher education.Experience with microservice architectures.Experience of Spring Boot, strongly preferred.Experience of configuring and using Keycloak.Experience with Docker and Docker Compose.Experience with Kubernetes.Experience in architecting systems and/or defining system or application requirements.Experience and strong track record of developing applications in Java. Knowledge of Java 17+.Experience with front-end (Model-View-Presenter) and back-end (microservices) software design and implementation.Experience documenting technical solutions and presenting technical problems and solutions to diverse audiences.Experience with the Web Ontology Language (OWL) and the Resource Description Framework (RDF). EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED): Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED): Expertise in designing, developing, testing, and deploying applications.Proficiency with application design and data modeling.Ability to define and solve logical problems for highly technical applications.Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical clients.Ability to lead activities on structured team development projects.Ability to select, adapt, and effectively use a variety of programming methods.Knowledge of application domain. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.Frequently sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.Occasionally stand/walk, writing by hand.Rarely use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
