Job description

TRAUMA REGISTRAR – Emergency Department

Remote Position – some on-site attendance will be  required.

SUMMARY

Works under general supervision to the Trauma Program Manager and the Director of Emergency Services. The Trauma Registrar is responsible for the collection/abstraction of required state and national trauma data bank elements into the Trauma Registry database on all patients meeting state or national trauma inclusion criteria. The Trauma Registrar maintains confidentiality of the registry data and provides registry data as appropriate for research.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Performs data collection of demographics and coding of clinical ad follow-up data for all sources into the trauma registry database.
  2. Interacts with physicians, nurses, and other members of the trauma team to perform trauma registry functions.
  3. Keeps trauma registry data entry and abstraction current as defined by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) completed no longer than 45 days of patient discharge.
  4. Determines appropriateness patient entry into the Trauma Registry based on guidelines in the American College of Surgeons ‘Resources for the Optimal Care of the Injured Patient” as well as the National Trauma Data Standards.
  5. Provides high quality data entry by abstraction of required state and national trauma data elements from the patient chart in real time and retrospectively.
  6. Participates in quality assurance, data validation, and improvement activities to ensure accuracy of data collection and timely submission of data according to the State Trauma Registry and the American College of Surgeons Optimal Resource Document for Trauma Centers.
  7. Resolves routine coding issues/problems and appropriately seeks assistance from Trauma Program leadership and/or Trauma Registry vendor for assistance.
  8. Recognizes patterns of mechanism of injury during case abstraction in order to contribute to opportunities for injury prevention and community safety.
  9. Reports data in formats such as Excel and /or PowerPoint for both internal and external consumption.
  10. Able to work independently on assigned projects and to recommend improvements to the process of collecting, maintaining, and reporting patient information.
  11. Ensures confidentiality of data at all times
  12. Performs other duties as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed primarily in a hospital or hospital clinic environment. Walking, standing, bending, turning, and stooping. The job is remote work capable.

Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimum require prior approval of Vice President for Human Resources Administration or his/her designee.

This position is security-sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code §51.215.
