Virginia | United States

Job description

At AES, we raise the quality of life around the world by changing the way energy works. Everyone makes an impact every day in our small, global teams. Apply here to start an extraordinary career today.

We are seeking a power system intern to join the AES Next – Organic Grid (OG) team, where they will play a pivotal role in supporting grid modeling and simulation. The OG team collaborates with AES and various industry partners, aiming to expedite the transition to clean energy. We use the best available technologies to address emerging challenges in grid operations, planning, and interconnection. This is a great opportunity to contribute to the transformation of the energy sector and make a significant impact on our sustainable future.

Internship Description

Under supervision, the intern will work on projects including power systems modeling, simulations, market research, and data analysis. The responsibilities can include the following:

· Develop, map, and model electrical systems and their components for projects related to the bulk power grid.

· Analyze grid-enhancing technologies, including storage, and their applications in power systems.

· Research FERC Order 2222 and collaboratively explore physical and business models for DERs/aggregators to participate in the U.S. wholesale market.

· Apply script languages and commercial tools to perform power flow simulation and analyze the results.

· Assist with the development of Python and VBA programs for electrical engineering projects.

· Develop statistical and predictive models using machine learning algorithms to forecast key power system parameters, e.g., power flows, congestion, and interconnection upgrade costs.

· Prepare and present technical reports related to electrical engineering projects.

· Collaborate with AES Renewable and Utilities to ensure project success.

· Other tasks as assigned by the manager.

Past projects have included developing time series power flow models, transmission and storage cost estimators, and over-head transmission line rating calculation. Interns will also contribute to the enhancement of the technology radar, the AES Next system for tracking and evaluating new technologies. The technology radar is based on deep fundamentals analysis and underpins the AES thesis-driven investment approach.

Qualifications

· Pursuing a master’s or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.

· Strong background in power systems engineering, optimization, and data analytics.

· Familiar with Python, R, or VBA and comfortable with developing programs using one or more of these languages.

· Demonstrate curiosity about and knowledge of emerging energy technologies and trends.

· A GPA of 3.5 and above is preferred.
