Join Jean Hoefliger, consulting winemaker for over 20 premium wineries in Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. Jean’s international acclaim is fueled by the quality of the brands his team makes from start to finish, and that team is looking for an intern to be a part of every aspect of their operation. This position will focus on lab work, but be heavily involved in cellar and vineyard operations as well. This is a great opportunity to see every aspect of how Jean’s winemaking works, as your experience will start in the vineyards following vineyard maturity and then follow the flow of winemaking into cellar and lab responsibilities as needed.
Primary Job Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Vineyard Responsibilities:
• Vineyard maturity sampling and processing.
• Provides additional set of eyes and ears in vineyards. Notifies teams of water line breaks, etc...
Laboratory:
• Perform laboratory analysis on juice and wine including Brix, pH, TA, FSO2/TSO2, ethanol, and enzymatic assays for malic acid, reducing sugars, YAN, and volatile acidity.
• Record and communicate accurate lab records.
• Communicate and work with the winemaking team and cellar crew to monitor fermentations, including cleaning, sampling, and important additions/inoculations.
• Responsible for the overall cleanliness and organization of the lab.
• Daily set-up and calibration of laboratory equipment.
• Communicate effectively with winemaking staff.
• Ensures all company policies and procedures are followed.
Cellar:
• Receiving and processing fruit, crushing, sorting, pressing, etc.
• Operation and cleaning of crush equipment
• Additions to juice, must and wine
• Punch-downs and Pump-overs
• Racking and Wine transfer
• Barrel filling, topping, stirring and racking
• Continuing to top and monitor over vintage wines
• Monitoring Fermentation
• Drain down and dig outs from tanks and presses
Core Requirements:
• Coursework in Viticulture and Enology or related science field is strongly recommended.
• Previous winery/lab experience is preferred.
• Must be computer literate (Word, Excel) with excellent reasoning abilities, outstanding verbal communication skills, and strong data management skills.
• Must be able to speak, read, and write fluently English.
• Ability to understand and comply with all safety requirements.
• Tolerate exposure to outside elements (heat, wet and/or damp conditions, cold).
• Reliable transportation to work.
• Positive attitude and ability to be a team player.
• Self-driven problem solver is one way your co-workers would describe you.
• Juggling competing interests and prioritizing a list of “to-do’s” is familiar territory.
• Your attention to detail allows you to work through multi-step processes with precision and care.
• You can take direction, but are also unafraid to ask questions, double check calculations and seek advice/clarification when something is unclear.
• Ability to immerse yourself in the work with irregular and often long hours (early mornings, evenings and/or weekends).
• Resilient to physical demands like digging, kneeling and standing for long periods of time.
DETAILS
Location: Multiple Sites across the Napa Valley
Start Date: Mid-August to end of year.
Compensation: $21-24/hour
We are happy to assist candidates in finding affordable local housing however are unable to provide housing this season. Lunch provisions will be made available. Mileage will be reimbursed.
