The Teaching Commons is excited to announce a variety of faculty development sessions taking place throughout the spring 2024 semester. Please plan on attending any or all of the following events:

February

Faculty Book Club — Presented by Julius Crump
2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, Hedberg Library 172
Join a book group and discussion of “What Inclusive Instructors Do: Principles and Practices for Excellence in College Teaching” by Tracie Marcella Addy, Derek Dub, Khadijah A. Mitchell, and Mallory E. SoRelle (2021). Please email Prof. Crump ([email protected]) to sign up for the book club. The first 10 members will receive a free copy of the book.

Orientation to Using Embedded Tutors in College Classrooms — Presented by Heather Carroll, Mark Mahoney, David Brownholland, and Kateryna Sylaska
4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, Hedberg Library 217A (Saemann lab)
Attend a panel discussion on how to support faculty interested in partnering with a peer tutor, including various ideas on how to best involve the tutor in classroom activities to directly support students during class time.

Study Tours 101 — Presented by Erik Kulke
4 p.m., Tuesday, March 12, Lentz Hall 337
This informational session will focus on how to develop and offer a J-Term study tour. All faculty interested in learning the basics about this rewarding teaching opportunity are invited to attend.

Getting Past Learning Bottlenecks in Collaboration with Student Partners — Presented by Leslie Cameron, Temple Burling, and Sophia Choronzuk ’25
4 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, Lentz Hall 337
This roundtable discussion will introduce two distinct but complementary frameworks in the scholarship of teaching and learning — Decoding the Disciplines and Students as Partners. Attendees will explore how they might use these frameworks to enhance student learning and to energize their own teaching.

Wagner Fellowship Informational Session — Presented by David GarcÍa and Jun Wang
4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, Zoom
Current Wagner Fellows will share their research projects and insights into the process of applying for the Wagner Fellowship. Attendees will learn about next steps in applying for this year’s fellowship awards.
