Job description
Remote contract opportunity!
System One is seeking to contract with an exceptional Nuclear Design and Shielding Engineer to support a project focused on Molten-Chloride Fast Reactor technology. This project is dynamic and evolutionary. As such, new responsibilities often arise, and you should be capable of and excited about learning and applying specialized skills. This is a 6-month contract opportunity with a remote work model.
Responsibilities
- Perform radiation shielding design and analysis for advanced nuclear reactors and medical isotopes separations facility, including calculating dose, activation rates, half thicknesses, DPA rates, energy deposition rates and gas production rates.
- Develop radiation source term based on materials activation analysis for non-fuel in-vessel components.
- Design and analyze new systems for solving complex problems.
- Design and execute sensitivity studies to understand the effects and validity of various modeling assumptions, including model geometry complexity, meshing, variance reduction techniques, transport options, cross section preparation, etc., and help build corrected methods if necessary.
- Establish and maintain documentation of analysis results and radiation shielding design solutions.
Ideal Background - B.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering or equivalent experience; Advanced degree and 2+ years of relevant experience with nuclear analysis preferred.
- Knowledgeable or highly motivated to quickly learn basic nuclear reactor design concepts to meaningfully support engineering team with understanding of systems being designed and code being reviewed.
- Experience in core and/or radiation shielding design, analysis, and criticality safety.
- Strong computational expertise.
- Experience with radiation shielding software such as Attila, MCNP, ADVANTG, Serpent, MAVRIC, MicroShield, SCALE, OpenMC, Whisper, PARTISN, etc.
- Experience with detailed depletion software such as ORIGEN
- Experience with nuclear core analysis software such as ARMI, DIF3D, MC2, DRAGON etc.
- Experience with computed aided drafting (e.g., SolidWorks, SpaceClaim/ANSYS, Cubit)
- Good working knowledge of nuclear and/or general numerical methods (e.g., activation analysis, dose rates, PDEs, dynamics, deterministic and stochastic particle transport, isotopic depletion, nuclear data, etc.).
- Excellent verbal and communication skills.
- Ability and professionalism to work within published regulatory guidelines for nuclear reactor design.
- Fast reactor experience preferred.
- An ability to perform professional-quality software development for nuclear applications is preferred.
- Strong programming skills in any language is a plus, but bonus points will be awarded for Python, Git, C++, and Fortran skills.
- Experience working under NQA-1 quality program desired.
