Description This is responsible professional work providing medical care and treatment to sheltered animals in the Hernando County Animal Shelter. This position is responsible for providing veterinary services including administering injections and medication, post-operative observations, administrating medical treatments and monitoring the health and care of impounded animals in a shelter facility, medical testing and test results interpretation, inventory control and security of drugs, laboratory work, to include a broad variety of clinical and laboratory activities and related clerical duties. Work is performed under the direction of the Animal Services Manager.

- The salary range for this position is: $94,192.00 - $141,288.00, depending on qualifications and experience.

Examples of Duties - Examine and treat sick and injured animals.
- Oversee animal population limits.
- Perform surgeries on adopted animals and vaccinate for rabies.
- Makes animal assessment rounds to score the adoptability of animals that will factor into their pathway planning.
- Direct euthanasia in accordance with County policy and recognized humane practices.
- Oversee the County's compliance with FDA laws and regulations, works closely with the Manager to ensure that there is a proper inventory of supplies, including vaccinations, medications, microchips and controlled-drugs.
- Participate in animal cruelty and neglect investigations, including testifying in court (as requested by the Hernando County Sheriff's office).
- Work closely with the Hernando County Sheriff's Office to oversee their Field Animal Control Officers, emergency use of animal sedation and euthanasia drugs.
- Maintain effective working relationships and liaisons with outside veterinarians, professional veterinary organizations, animal and civic organizations, and other county officials.
Emergency Response
County employees are required to report to work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description.
Typical Qualifications Education
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an accredited College or University.
Experience
Experience practicing veterinarian medicine.
Licenses, Certifications or Registrations
- Veterinary License in good standing with the Florida Board of Veterinary Medicine or the ability to obtain within thirty (30) days of employment.
- Drug Enforcement Agency License
- Valid Florida Driver's License in good standing.
