General Requirements:

This is a tenure track, 12-month position. Reports to the Director of Library Public Services.

Nature & Purpose of Position/Usual Duties:

The Research and Instruction (R&I) Librarian is responsible for providing professional reference/information services to students, faculty, staff, and other library users, participating in the library's instruction program, and building relationships with the university community to meet their learning, teaching, and research needs.

As a tenure-track library faculty member, the R&I librarian is expected to participate in professional activities, professional development, scholarly research, publication, and service activities as outlined in Academic Policy Statement 900417 for Faculty Reappointment, Tenure, and Promotion.

Subject Liaison Departments:
School of Teaching and Learning, Counselor Education, and Library Science and Technology, in the College of Education

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

• Collaborates with the public service team and others to provide coordinated information services, including general reference in a variety of formats (e.g., in-person, chat, email) which may include selected evenings or weekends.
• Works with students, faculty, staff, and other library users in locating and interpreting library resources across academic disciplines. This includes the use of electronic and traditional print sources. Maintains a current working knowledge of general reference tools and an awareness of relevant policies, procedures, and practices.
• Participates in the library's information literacy initiatives by promoting integration into the curriculum of designated subject disciplines, identifying, and implementing appropriate (on-line and in-person) instruction methods and materials, staying abreast of developments in reference and instruction, and conducting hands-on classes and individual consultation and/or instruction as needed or assigned. Participates in assessment of library services.
• Designs, implements, and assesses online tools, modules, web-based tutorials, and other relevant formats that enhance research and reference skills and facilitate access to library resources and collections.
• Participates in building and maintaining the library's collections, including reference materials, in designated subject disciplines by recommending and facilitating requests of books and other format items. Promoting the library's collections, services, and expertise to faculty in liaison areas, and selecting items for addition or withdrawal.
• Participates in continuing education activities to maintain or develop skills that enhance the performance of position responsibilities.
• Duties performed in the usual course of the job.
