Thermo Fisher Scientific's Materials & Structural Analysis Division (MSD) is part of the Analytical Instruments Group (AIG) and supplies innovative solutions for microscopy, spectroscopy and microanalysis.

The Sr. Staff System Design Engineer plays a central role throughout the different phases of product development and life cycle. This position is part of a leadership team responsible for developing and supporting next generation FIB and SEM metrology systems as well as supporting and improving current systems. The candidate will have a lead role in next generation product development, from technology evaluation and selection, specifications development, product configuration and validation, transfer to manufacturing, and support of customer ramp. Responsibilities will include designing, planning and leading experiments and trade-off studies required to make major design decisions on complex systems. The candidate must be effective at leading a team of engineers to achieve program goals, and at collaborating with adjacent functions and team members (technical marketing, operations, procurement, manufacturing, etc.) to consolidate inputs and achieve optimal product configurations.

The role is part of a team developing the preeminent innovative wafer-to-atomic information workflows, enabling our semiconductor customers to make timely decisions. By accelerating the information age, we are helping make the world healthier, cleaner and safer.

Key responsibilities:

• Lead hardware, applications and software engineering design teams to develop, integrate and deliver robust, automated products and work flows according to system specifications.
• Contribute to the definition of system architecture and software roadmaps and coordinate development activities among various sites and groups.
• Collaborate with program management, system architects, technical marketing, and customers to define and deliver product features and program objectives.
• Mentor design and applications engineers at all levels and influence the design to meet program goals.
• Drive good engineering practices and facilitate de-centralized decision making.
• Coordinate work involving a variety of equipment including SEM, FIB, HVPS, vacuum, gas chemistry, detectors, optics, robots, electro-mechanical systems and pneumatics.
• Develop strategies and facilitate system alignment, diagnostics and calibration.
• Drive resolution of technical issues that may impact product introduction and ramp.
• Facilitate training of operations and field personnel.

Keys to Success:

• Ph.D. or equivalent experience in Optics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related technical field.
• 10+ years of technical leadership in requirements-based product development of semiconductor capital equipment.
• Direct knowledge of semiconductor technology and process flows.
• Experience developing metrology for the semiconductor or other manufacturing industries. SEM experience highly preferred.
• Demonstrated ability in leading multidisciplinary teams, developing system requirements and making system and process flow design decisions.
• Proven track record in driving collaborative and innovative solutions under fixed project schedules.
• Excellent communication skills (oral and written).
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally (25% maximum).
