AGENCY DESCRIPTION: The Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL) in the Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry has an opening for an Outdoor Recreation Planner (Senior Planner) position. BPL manages over 700,000 acres of fee-owned land with conservation easements and leases bringing the total land area conserved to over 2 million acres. These lands are managed for a variety of resource values including recreation, cultural and historic values, wildlife, ecology, and timber. This permanent full-time position may be located in Augusta, Farmington, or Bangor.*


JOB DESCRIPTION: The Bureau’s Outdoor Recreation Planner provides professional services supporting land management and planning across Maine Public Lands, State Parks, and Historic Sites, in context with adjacent private lands. Working with a team of resource managers and specialists, the position provides guidance and management for outdoor recreation projects including but not limited to trails, waterways, campsites, and other predominantly primitive recreation resources. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other tools, the position supports inventory and assessment efforts aiding in recreation resource management across the Bureau’s properties and interests. Additionally, the Outdoor Recreation Planner periodically develops surveys and other social science initiatives to assess visitor use and visitor experiences. Work may be in remote locations, and some overnight travel is required.

The position plays an important role in developing and implementing the Bureau’s policies regarding outdoor recreation on Maine’s State Parks and Public Lands. Development of Maine’s 5-year State Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) is led by the position. The position serves as a liaison to numerous partner organizations including but not limited to the Maine Island Trail Association and the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. Another aspect of the position is helping craft and deliver conservation and stewardship messages to the public through signage, kiosks, social media, and direct communications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A bachelor’s degree in assigned area and four (4) years of related work experience. Equivalent related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

Assigned area for this position: Parks and Recreation management, natural resources, forestry, environmental sciences, or a related field.
