POSITION SUMMARY The Medical Assistant performs a variety of clinical and clerical work in support of The Culinary Institute of America’s (CIA) Health Services office, including ensuring all students receive high quality, efficient medical care. The Medical Assistant assists with providing care while promoting a holistic vision for the health and wellness of students and building support in order to sustain a healthy campus environment.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES - Assists with student flow in the Health Services office. Monitors student arrival, escorts students to exam room, monitors student wait times, and assists nurses with triage when needed.
- Manages student health records in Electrical Medical Records (EMR) system and compiles weekly reports. Assists with creating reports relevant to the health office and with transitioning into a paperless office.
- Following Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy (FERPA) policies, confidentially compiles health and demographic information from students, noting health history including social and emotional aspects. Refers student to appropriate internal and external resources to meet identified health, social and mental health needs. Prepares patient activity statistics such as the frequency and nature of visits and consultations.
- Interviews patients, obtains vital signs and records their medical history. Observes and records patients’ conditions and reactions to medications and treatments.
- Answers phones, responds to inquiries and triages calls to appropriate personnel. Provides guidance to students based on policies and protocols.
- Aids in managing infectious illness outbreaks and preventative precautions. Follows protocols regarding COVID-19 related matters.
- Performs annual student health screening tests (e.g., hearing, vision) and performs other tests (e.g., Electrocardiograms) on students as necessary based on clinical symptoms and for medication monitoring.
- Obtains laboratory specimens as ordered, arranging for timely transportation to the lab for accurate testing.
- Sets up examination rooms and equipment before and after use. Ensures that surfaces, equipment, fixtures, and supplies are properly cleaned, stored, and organized for efficient access by providers.
- Ensures all medical forms are completed prior to student arrivals. Places student accounts on hold if needed. Works with Admissions and other departments in preparing students for the new semester. Assesses student’s immunization records for completeness, using Advisory Committee Immunization Practices (ACIP) guidelines as the gold standard.
- Maintains and assists nurses with inventory control and ordering of inventory.
- Schedules/confirms appointments, checks voicemail, follows up on students seen in urgent care/ED and assists with referrals.
- Any and all other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Experience:
- Minimum of one (1) year of medical assistant experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Medical Assistant Certificate.
REQUIRED SKILLS - Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to be adaptable, dependable and handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Demonstrated ability to show a high level of service responsiveness to customers.
- Ability to use sound judgment and discretion in handling sensitive health related issues with confidentiality and discretion.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Must have demonstrated ability in organizational, time management, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
- Must display a high level of energy and self-motivation.
- Strong computer experience, which must include abilities to work effectively with medical record systems, scheduling systems and MS Office suite products, i.e. Word, Excel.
WORKING CONDITIONS - Must be able to work overtime on nights and weekends as required by business needs. Work requires the ability to work at a computer, sometimes in excess of eight (8) hours per day.
- Work is performed primarily in a health services environment.
- May require some lifting of equipment and or boxes of supplies and assisting patients which physical activities.
- Ability to stand and work for extended periods of time during service hours.
