Job description
Empire Landscape is an environmental restoration company in Silver Spring, Maryland offering an internship for a student or person who is interested or majoring in plant sciences. This position will require a minimum of 20 hours a week and will give students a hands-on experience with maintaining a native plant production in our nursery. Empire is dedicated to building a strong team of specialists with diverse backgrounds.
Duration: March - May (Seasonal)
Responsibilities
- Implementing plant propagation techniques and crop production.
- Managing crop irrigation through various methods such as hose, intermittent misting, broadcast, and drip.
- Performing basic Integrated Pest Management training, scouting, and soft chemical treatments.
- Undertaking crop maintenance activities including weeding, spacing, and pruning.
- Maintaining nursery cleanliness through container organization, sweeping, and composting.
- Assisting with plant selection, pulling, and tagging for projects.
- Loading and unloading plant deliveries.
- Operating skid loader, mini-skid, and other small machinery.
Qualifications
- High school diploma.
- Interest or studies in Plant Sciences within Horticulture, Arboriculture, Ecology, Environmental, or related field.
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
- Reliable transportation and consistent attendance.
- Adherence to safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to work diligently with periods of standing, lifting, and bending.
- Comfortable working in fluctuating outdoor environmental and weather conditions.
