Job description
Overview The Suicide Prevention Educator is responsible for the implementation and advancement of the Train core element of the Zero Suicide Initiative across the Wellstar system. Safe suicide care begins the moment the patient first enters our care continuum. It is essential that all staff members have the necessary skills to provide excellent care, which in turn will help staff to feel more confident in their ability to provide caring and effective assistance to patients with suicide risk. The Suicide Prevention Educator will function as a subject matter expert in suicidology, a peer coach, change agent, researcher, and suicide prevention consultant to staff.
The Suicide Prevention Educator reports to the Behavioral Health Service Line and is responsible for the curriculum development, training delivery, and individual coaching of team members for whom they have been designated to support. The Suicide Prevention Educator will provide cross-discipline training and will be required to lead by example within their scope of practice. The Suicide Prevention Educator will collaborate with the Behavioral Health Service Line and Organizational Learning to deliver high-quality Computer Based Learning activities and other multi-media content tools that meet standards required for Continued Education Credits across various healthcare disciplines.
Responsibilities Core Responsibilites and Essential Functions
- Leader of Learning
Implement and advance the scope and fidelity of the Train core element of the Zero Suicide Initiative across the system: train a competent, confident, and caring workforce, with a focus on sustainability of practice, process improvement, and behavior change
Provide best practice trainings on different elements of suicide prevention with fidelity to clinical and non-clinical audiences. Training activities may include:
QPR (Question Persuade Refer)
MHFA (Mental Health First Aid)
AMSR (Assessment and Management Suicide Risk)
Other trainings/Computer Based Learning (CBL) as needed
Provide opportunities for continuing education credits at onboarding and annually across disciplines by developing, delivering, and updating educational content on Suicide Prevention best practices and related topics with the goal of improving suicide care and reducing mortality.
Maintain system suicide prevention training records in SuccessFactors, ensuring courses are assigned to and completed by correct audiences, communicating with supervisors and other leaders as needed to maintain training compliance
Work with system leadership to coordinate standardized and objective measures of success related to training activities. Maintain training records and outcome evaluations. Regularly report out on progress towards goals and other Key Performance Indicators.
Develops other multi-modality suicide prevention resources to increase accessibility to science-backed best practices for healthcare workers and the community at large
Partners with internal and external resources (e.g. OL, Career Development, professional organizations) to ensure team members are aware of and how to access relevant resources that support their career and professional development. - Evidence Based Practice and Research
Function as a Subject Matter Expert in Suicide Prevention, the Zero Suicide Initiative, Self-Directed Violence Classification System, Joint Commission standards, and emerging best practices related to the care of patients at risk for suicide
Utilize the Zero Suicide Work Force Survey, input from stakeholders, and advancements in national best practices to identify system training needs and advance process improvement initiatives.
Synthesize annual GA Department of Public Health Mortality Data, and Electronic Medical Record to inform training strategy and content.
Maintains all relevant competencies, certifications and licenses as a subject matter expert, in order to maintain credibility and relevance to the work and meet learning goals in the system. - Support Success of Wellstar?s Zero Suicide Initiative
Provide coaching to interdisciplinary team members at their worksite to ensure delivery of EBP with fidelity
Help provide coverage or other needed assistance during times of disaster

Qualifications Required Minimum Education
- Master's Degree Master?s or advanced degree in: nursing, social work, counseling, marriage & family therapy, psychology, education, public health, health promotion, health communications or a related field. Required or
- Other Education Degrees in other fields might be considered with evidence of sufficient experience and/or professional certification in the areas listed above. Required
Required Minimum Experience
- Minimum 2 years professional experience in suicide prevention within a health or behavioral health system. Required and
- Applied experience as an educator, with clear evidence of having provided didactic instruction in prior professional roles. Such experience could be demonstrated through employment in a university setting or through other applied clinical experiences. Required and

- adept in working with persons and populations with diverse backgrounds
- Ability to read, write and speak English language, optimize the use of technology to support learning and holds basic computer skills;
- Strong interpersonal, collaborative skills along with customer service skills required;
- Ability to function in a fast paced environment and respond to emergencies in using a decisive, composed and respectful manner;
- Possess excellent time management skills;
- possess a strong understanding of learning adult learning theories and can utilize multi-methods to implement training/development.
- The person filling this role should have a high level of subject matter expertise in concepts related to suicidology and the ability to adapt teaching to a range of professionals with varied levels of content knowledge. (S)He should have strong verbal communicational abilities, breaking concepts down to an appropriate granular level given the audience. (S)He should have strong executive function, including the ability to organize content logically. (S)He should be able to present material confidently in public settings.
