This is a part-time 50% Limited appointment for seven months. This appointment may be extended or converted to career status based on the needs of the department.

The Toor Lab in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at UC San Diego is an interdisciplinary research group interested in RNA structure and function. Incumbent will assist the PI and will be involved in a creative and interdisciplinary research project on RNA splicing. Under supervision will work with large-scale cultures of green algae, and will perform molecular cloning tasks and use molecular biology techniques including DNA/RNA protein isolation, cryo-EM structure determination, purification of large ribonucleoprotein complexes, and reconstruction of RNA-protein complexes from recombinant proteins and RNAs. Incumbent will maintain lab equipment and supplies as well as general lab duties. Interact professionally with faculty, postdoctoral scholars, students, collaborators, visiting scholars, and research technicians in a medium-sized laboratory.
Experience in the in vitro transcription of RNA. Knowledge of FPLC purification of RNA.
Knowledge of Molecular Biology techniques, including DNA/RNA/protein isolation and molecular cloning. Experience in the reconstitution of RNA-protein complexes from recombinant proteins and RNA.
Ability to prepare and work with large-scale cultures of green algae.
Ability to record scientific data in a well-organized laboratory notebook. Good organizational skills including ability to keep clear and accurate records.
Skill to organize time, set priorities, meet established deadlines, and recognize new problems with constantly changing priorities and frequent interruptions.
Ability to develop organization of the research work environment of schedules, reagents, and data. Skill to use independent judgment and to make decisions and solve complex problems.
Ability to follow established EH&S Safety Regulations, as they pertain to Chemical Waste, Biohazards and inventory maintenance.
Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles.
Effective verbal and written communication skills using tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility with diverse personalities and situations. Ability to communicate effectively one-on-one or in group settings, taking into account differences in social, cultural, professional, and educational backgrounds.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and procedures.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of matters related to work.
Knowledge of specialized scientific terminology.
Knowledge of hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items such as gloves and goggles, etc.
