Tualatin Riverkeepers is searching for our next Advocacy and Policy Manager. The successful candidate will be in a public-facing role, leading the Tualatin Riverkeepers’ efforts to protect the Tualatin River watershed.
Mission
Tualatin Riverkeepers is a community-based organization that protects and restores Oregon’s Tualatin River watershed. We build watershed stewardship through engagement, advocacy, restoration, access, and education.
Position Description
The Advocacy and Policy Manager leads our Watershed Resilience program, which encompasses advocacy and policy work to protect the Tualatin River watershed. The Advocacy and Policy Manager, in the tradition of the “waterkeeper” movement, is the voice of the Tualatin River in regulatory and management schemes. The Tualatin River watershed is about one-third suburban, one-third agricultural, and one-third forested, and the Watershed Resilience program involves advocacy and policy in all three realms.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Regulatory policy tracking in land use, water quality, water quantity, wetlands modifications, and wildlife habitats and corridors.
- Collaborative work with partner organizations and alliances, as well as numerous state and local government officials and committees, working on issues within the watershed.
- Engagement with key local regulatory agency staff, including Clean Water Services, Oregon Dept. of Environmental Quality, and Oregon Dept. of State Lands.
- Monitoring and promptly responding to “hotline” alerts about potential pollution threats to the river, directing members of the public to the appropriate reporting agency to address issues.
- Coordinating, facilitating, and supporting the Watershed Watch Committee, an ad hoc group of environmental and scientific experts who provide technical expertise to guide our advocacy.
- Coordinating and supervising program volunteers, including college student interns.
- Manage TRK’s Pint-Sized Science program, where experts share knowledge or watershed-related issues to residents in an informal setting.
- Developing and maintaining a robust communications plan for the program, communicating our advocacy and policy work in a manner that increases understanding and spurs action.
- Assisting colleagues with events and grant proposals supporting the program and organization.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree and a strong environmental science-based ethic.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in public policy, community organizing, or related field
- Ability to work with community members from diverse backgrounds
- Familiarity with the legal, scientific, regulatory, and policy concepts and schemes related to climate resilience and watershed health.
- Ability to effectively collaborate with team members, colleagues, and partner organizations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor or Master’s degree in ecology, water related field, or J.D. with environmental focus
- Strong understanding of the Clean Water Act and NEPA
- Ability to speak Spanish
- Understanding of Tualatin watershed and its political landscape
Salary and Benefits:
- $52,000 – $58,000
