UPMC in Central PA is seeking motivated and enthusiastic candidates for our full-time Medical Assistant Trainee Program, with our next cohort beginning May 13, 2024! Through this paid training program, selected candidates will enroll in a UPMC-paid Medical Assistant course which includes clinical rotations, didactic skills modules, cost-free MA certification exam, and an externship placement at a UPMC Central PA outpatient clinic. In exchange for enrollment in the Medical Assistant trainee program, selected candidates must agree to the following:
- A commitment to a full-time, 40-hour/week work and class schedule for 4-5 months. This includes:
- Mandatory attendance at onsite classroom Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM
- A commitment to self-study time of covered materials (outside of classroom time) 7-10 hours/week
- A set hourly pay rate of $16.95/hour.
- A commitment to remain employed at UPMC in Central PA - Health Services Division for a minimum of 18 months beginning at time of enrollment in the trainee program .
Purpose: Under supervision, performs requested duties to assist physicians with various aspects of patient care (including clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks) ensuring patient satisfaction. Will be trained on proper protocol to demonstrate the ability to fulfill all functions detailed below.
Responsibilities:
- Send/receive patient medical records in accordance with Health Insurance, Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and other state and federal regulations.
- Obtain lab and x-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc. Complete forms and requisitions as needed. Schedule appointments. Verify insurance coverage and patient demographics. Prepare and manage charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately. Performs other front office responsibilities as required.
- Prepare patient rooms, set up instruments and equipment according to department protocol. Clean exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control. Clean according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records. Manage inventory of supplies; restocking exam/procedure rooms.
- Check schedules and organize patient flow. Accompany patients to exam/procedure room. Assist patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc. Collect patient information and history, take vitals, and perform screenings per provider guidelines. Relay instructions to patients and families.
- Answer calls and provide pertinent information including patient education as directed.
- Perform phlebotomy, EKG's, and level one labs. Perform clinic procedures according to policy and procedure. Assist physicians with procedures. Document patient information into the medical record.
- Comply with requirements of appropriate regulatory agencies (i.e., OSHA, CLIA, PA Department of Health). Maintain strict confidentiality related to medical records and other data. Comply with all UPMC Health System policies and procedures.

Qualifications:
High School or equivalent Current enrollment in a Medical Assistant training program is preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
