Job Summary
The LCSW provides a full range of evidence-based social work services that are patient-centered and guided by the patient’s diagnostic condition(s). The patient’s cognitive, psychological, emotional functioning, communication and learning capabilities, physical abilities, support system, living environment, and social influencers of health should be part of every assessment and addressed accordingly. Social work services include, but are not limited to, the following: biopsychosocial assessments, crisis interventions, psychiatric diagnostic evaluations informed by the current DSM, suicide risk and safety planning, supportive counseling, grief counseling, abuse/neglect mandated reporting, supporting victims of violence and/or human trafficking, symptom and harm reduction, identification of unknown patients, locating next of kin, educating and supporting patients and families around issues related to adaptation to the patient’s diagnosis, illness, treatment and/or life situation, and facilitating linkage to vital community-based resources for patients and families who are experiencing significant emotional, social, environmental, or financial stress due to hospitalization, acute, chronic, or terminal illness and/or who need help in meeting their continuing care needs.
The LCSW will participate in special projects, supervise interns, and collect data to improve the quality of services delivered to patients. The LCSW will participate in peer review and individual supervision. The supervisor and manager have total responsibility for work assigned, work schedules, performance evaluations, corrective action, promotion, and dismissal.

Minimum Qualifications
- Valid California Board of Behavioral Sciences License Clinical Social Worker license without restrictions. The LCSW must maintain a current LCSW licensure with the Board of Behavioral Science to maintain employment with UC Davis Health.
- Master of Science Degree in Social Work from accredited School of Social Work
- Basic computer skills
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language
- Ability to utilize medical terminology appropriately

- work practice, psychotherapy, case management, and the relationship between social work practice and medicine
- Knowledge of child abuse, elder abuse, and domestic violence reporting requirements, and other significant legislation and laws regulating social work practice, e.g., Tarasoff, patient confidentiality, etc. Ability to make appropriate interventions based on law and professional ethics
- Ability to provide consultation, interpret clinical findings and diagnosis, make recommendations regarding treatment, care, and disposition
- Experience within an acute medical hospital, mental health setting and/or health care clinic
- Ability to use clinical supervision to enhance professional growth and examine clinical work
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage multiple levels of information and responsibilities, and to quickly assess complex problems to develop potential solutions
- Skills, knowledge, and ability to complete psychiatric and psychosocial assessments for pediatric/adult/geriatric populations
- Knowledge of suicidal behavior, the ability to assess lethality, and the ability to develop appropriate safety plans with the patient and provide recommendations for follow-up care to the patient and interdisciplinary team
- Knowledge of legal requirements and guidelines for providing psychiatric services including the appropriate use of 5l50 application
- Knowledge of and ability to effectively use current DSM manual
- Ability to assess adjustment to illness and coping, as well as provide brief counseling for individual/family and/or group
- Skills, knowledge, and ability working with death/dying/bereavement issues
Preferred Qualifications
- Specialty social work certification from accredited organization such as the NASW, ACMA, etc.

The mission of the Department of Clinical Social Services is to provide compassionate, comprehensive, high-quality Clinical Social Services to restore and/or enhance the biopsychosocial functioning of patients and their families. Physical Demands and Work Environment
- LCSWs are available on-site 24 hours a day
- The LCSW works variable hours, which include occasional overtime, flexible hours, weekend, and holiday shifts, to meet the operational needs of the Clinical Social Services department
- The LCSW must adhere to policies and procedures and adapt easily to changes to workflow, work standards, work practices and work assignments because of advancements in technology, healthcare coverage changes, new/revised regulatory requirements, and new social work practice standards and programs
- The LCSW shall adhere to and promote the ethics and values of the social work profession, using the NASW Code of Ethics as a guide to ethical decision making
- The LCSW will advocate for the patient’s right to self-determination, confidentiality, access to supportive services and resources, and appropriate inclusion in decision-making
- Duties shall be performed in a manner that reduces health disparities and barriers to care
- The LCSW shall treat all patients with dignity, respect, and demonstrate appreciation of cultural, developmental, and physiological differences
- LCSWs must have a strong foundation of clinical knowledge and skills on which to base assessments and interventions
- The LCSW is expected to practice autonomously and adhere to the National Association of Social Workers Health Care and Clinical Practice Standards
- Autonomous clinical social work practice is the ability of an LCSW to assess and provide social work interventions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. Independent judgment is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care
- The LCSW must appropriately prioritize and triage patient referrals and perform work with many interruptions during the work shift
- The LCSW must be able to work effectively within a stressful, sometimes hazardous environment with rapidly changing priorities and deadlines
- The LCSW must have excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with patients and families, various members of the health care team, other health facilities, community health related organizations, various external parties, and regulatory agencies
- The LCSW must be able to hear and understand sufficiently to effectively communicate via the telephone
- The LCSW must be able to see sufficiently to obtain information from paper, audio, and computer sources
- The LCSW must be able to lift 25 pounds and walk, sit or stand for prolonged periods
- The LCSW shall use the following communication devises: telephones, copy and fax machines, Vocera and pagers
- LCSW shall carry a pager and Vocera during their work shift and respond to Vocera and pager messages in a timely manner
- The LCSW must be proficient with computer programs and experience with electronic medical records
- The LCSW must abide by all Joint Commission Requirements including but not limited to sensitivity to cultural diversity, patient rights, safety and security of physical environments, emergency management, teamwork, respect for others, participation in ongoing education and training, communication and adherence to safety and quality programs, sustaining compliance with National Patient Safety Goals, and licensure and health screenings
- The LCSW shall maintain the highest level of confidentiality when dealing with patient records and personal information
Special Requirements
- This position is a critical position and subject to a background check and drug screen. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history, identity checks and drug screen.
