Job description
Are you ready to join a rapidly growing life science company where new ideas are celebrated, and employee development is a priority?
Then meet HistoWiz! Since 2013, we have been helping our customers at leading pharma, biotech, and academic institutions advance scientific research and discoveries through the automation of histology and digital pathology solutions. Based in New York City, we have funding from some of the leading life science venture capital groups.
We’re looking for a Mid-Level Product Manager (PM) to help decide our product strategy. You’ll work with almost all the teams at HistoWiz to prioritize incoming requests from sales, customer service, clientele, and our laboratory staff to align with a product roadmap. This role will serve as a Product Manager for two products of HistoWiz. LIMS - an in-house tool for our laboratory to handle an order lifecycle and the “PathologyMap Platform” - where clients digitally view and manage their slides, collaborating and organizing amongst their teams. We have an ambitious vision where our platform should be in the upcoming years, and you will play a critical role in shaping and implementing features critical to our success. The ideal candidate enjoys solving complex problems, has excellent communication skills, team building experience, and thrives in a fast-paced setting that is constantly evolving. They should be a self-starter with demonstrated ability to think strategically and analytically about business and technical challenges. HistoWiz values authentic, collaborative individuals who think creatively and will proactively seek out opportunities to advance the growth initiatives of our business.
Here are some likely tasks you’ll do throughout a week
- Think through ideas that would help the overall long-term success of HistoWiz.
- Build out design schematics in Figma.
- Attend an engineering meeting and prioritize upcoming features.
- Communicate with team members about upcoming releases via email, Google Docs, or a meeting.
- Gather feedback for released features.
- Talk to our clients and collect feedback on implemented features and new needs.
- Train our internal teams on new features, including sales and laboratory staff.
- Weigh the pros and cons of feature requests. It’s easy to say yes to “good” -ish ideas, but doing so will lead to lacking resources for great ideas
Requirements
- A bit of a cliche, but a self-starter attitude is a must. Many new projects can be ambiguous; the role requires independent critical thinking skills.
- Ability to get things done. We favor execution over meetings that “show you’re working”.
- Tech-savvy, fast learner. We use a lot of tools to leverage our workflow, GitHub, Asana, Monday, Notion, etc.
- These tools frequently change from time to time, so the ability to pick up new tools is more important to us than mastering expertise with our existing ones.
- A science background (and/or heavy interest).
- An aptitude for creating UI/UX-friendly design schematics. Ideally, the PM will create specs in Figma for stakeholders later passed to Engineering.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. It’s critical to persuade others on why (or why not) product features should be implemented or prioritized.
- Empathy - an ideal PM should be thinking about how features are used. Will creating a feature cause joy or irritation? Can we change existing features to improve the customer experience?
- Some previous experience at a startup is preferred (although not necessary).
- 2+ years in a product manager type role at another company.
- Our Tech Platform runs on a React Frontend / Python Backend. We’ve created a REST API that liaisons between the frontend and backend.
- Most of our design on the app is based on MaterialUI.
- Our team consists of a talented mix of front-end and back-end engineers.
- Currently, our bottleneck is having a PM who can decide on upcoming prioritized features, review the features on staging, and give the green light for approval after speaking to stakeholders.
Benefits
We believe in investing in our employees’ professional development and encourage networking within the bioscience, tech, and startup communities for all our employees and collaborators. Compensation is top-notch, and stock options are available for outstanding employees, commensurate with the impact you have within our organization and for the scientific community overall. In addition, we provide the time and freedom to pursue independent projects.
- 100% coverage on employee health, vision, and dental insurance, partial coverage for family
- Memberships to TeleDoc and TalkSpace (one year)
- Parental leave
- NY Commuter benefits
- Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Savings Account (HSA)
- Retirement planning (401k)
