Job Description WHO WE'RE SEEKING: Grossmont College seeks academic professionals who are dedicated to equitable student success outcomes for all students. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES :
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the position will be responsible for providing counseling services for students with disabilities. DSPS Counselors participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of students with disabilities and support advancement of the visions, missions and values of the college and District. This position may include a combination of day and evening assignments, and is being offered by a college strongly committed to the 'open door' concept serving a diverse student population. DSPS Counselors will be expected to perform other duties consistent with their faculty job description as stated in the faculty contract.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : APPLICANTS MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA :
(1) Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling, or
(2) Master's degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling, or a Bachelor's degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and either fifteen or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a postsecondary Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) Program or in a program dealing predominantly or exclusively with people with disabilities, or two years of fulltime experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following; (A) Counseling for students with disabilities; or (B) Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS :
- Knowledge and expertise working with adults who have disabilities in such categories as: acquired brain injury, intellectual disability, learning disabilities, physical, mental health, speech and language, visual, and hearing.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience of counseling practices/strategies in assigning appropriate academic accommodations to students with disabilities with respect to educational and functional limitations and academic needs.
- Knowledge and experience reviewing verification of disability records.
- Demonstrated experience and ability to interpret, articulate and implement a variety of regulations, policies and procedures concerning community college Disabled Student Programs and Services (DSPS).
- Experience counseling students about community college options including certificate, associate's degree and/or transferring to four-year institutions.
- Experience in the development of educational and career plans from a disability management perspective at the community college or university level.
- Demonstrated ability to use technology in providing counseling and matriculation services.
- Training and experience working with individuals or groups in providing personal counseling.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to collaborate with the on-campus community or community at large in programs or initiatives that are specifically designed to help historically underrepresented students achieve their educational goals.
- Skills and experience to motivate students from a broad spectrum of academic, socioeconomic, age, cultural, language, disability, sexual orientation and gender identity, and ethnic backgrounds.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS : Candidates will also be evaluated for qualifications in the following:
- Ability to contribute to the mission and strategic plan of the college.
- Familiarity with the community college culture and needs of the students.
- Bilingual capabilities are desired, but not necessary.
- Knowledge of assistive technology in accommodating students with disabilities.
- Training and experience working with individuals in providing crisis counseling.
