The Director Federal Taxes leads the world-wide aspects of the United States federal and Canadian tax compliance functions, with responsibility for reducing tax expense and improving positive cash flow. This position directs the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Canadian audits - Resolving issues with the IRS in real-time, so the audit is complete with the filing of the income tax return.

The incumbent is also responsible for United States and Canadian tax accounting - Ensuring tax expense is properly determined and reported in accordance with United States Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (U.S. GAAP) and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulatory rules. He/She leads and manages all aspects of United States customs and border protection taxes and United States federal excise taxes to reduce tax expense, improve positive cash flow and avoid penalties.

The responsibilities of the Director Federal Taxes will include, but not be limited to the following:

• Manage the United States federal and Canadian tax compliance function - Ensuring returns are accurately, timely and efficiently prepared and substantial authority exists for positions taken. Analyze complex transactions/issues.
• Lead the United States and Canada tax income tax accounting to ensure tax transactions and positions are properly accounted for, reported and disclosed in accordance with local rules and regulations, and are within a control framework compliant with SOX.
• Manage IRS and Canadian audits - Ensuring timely responses to inquiries. Continue to advance the real-time audit vision with the Audit teams and promote the favorable relational aspects of the IRS and Canadian audit.
• Provide guidance and expertise with respect to trade, federal excise, executive comp and payroll taxes.  Implement processes to meet compliance requirements most efficiently for trade and federal excise tax.
• Identify, develop, recruit and retain a Tax staff through on-going communication, evaluation and feedback.

Professional Experience & Competencies:

• 15 years or more years of experience in progressive more Tax assignments, with at least 2 years in a leading role in United States Federal Tax compliance and the IRS audit process. 
• Direct supervision of Tax staff. 
• Track record of achieving measurable tax objectives.
• Experience in negotiating tax issues in audit setting.
• Knowledge of financial accounting rules (United States/International tax rules and practices)
• Intimate working knowledge of United States tax law/GAAP
• Excellent analytical and research skills
• Innovative, decision maker
• Highly developed communication skills (verbal/written)
• Ability to lead/manage people, processes and projects
• A visible and passionate leader 
• Has the personal courage to recommend/make difficult decisions
• Able to analyze and grasp a situation quickly from different perspectives and create well-reasoned solutions.
• Innately comfortable with complexity and ambiguity

Education:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
• Master’s Degree in Accounting or Finance, LLM or CPA preferred
