Position Summary/Description:

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

Reporting to the Vice Provost for University Libraries and University Librarian, the Associate University Librarian ( AUL ) for Health Sciences and Director of the Health Sciences Library ( HSL ) serves as a member of the University Libraries' leadership team. The AUL leads the Health Sciences Library, developing and sustaining a vision for the unit that is aligned with future directions and strategic goals of the University Libraries. The AUL fulfills this responsibility by leading, supporting, and developing a dynamic team in creating and implementing innovative, collaborative, and sustainable practices, collections, services, and programs; actively promotes and incorporates tools and methods that create new opportunities for research, teaching, and public service engagement; and oversees HSL facilities and infrastructure.

The AUL supports and grows collaborative activities and outreach to the five Health Affairs schools, UNC Medical Center, and other partners such as the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute (NC TraCS) and the Carolina Health Informatics Program ( CHIP ). The AUL mentors HSL staff in developing research for publication and may lead on research teams. The AUL is actively engaged in fundraising and donor stewardship in collaboration with the University Librarian and the University Libraries' development office. They identify and develop grant-funding opportunities and support grant management.

The AUL participates in university-wide programs as appropriate and may represent the entire library system locally, regionally, or nationally. The AUL promotes a culture of collaboration and is an engaged member of the campus community to advance strategic priorities. The AUL proactively advances the University Libraries' commitment to inclusive excellence, helping to maintain a welcoming, inclusive, and open educational and workplace climate for all and to create an environment of respect and collaboration where vision and innovation can flourish.

Education and Experience:

Advanced degree in a relevant or related field
Understanding of the issues of scholarly communication and the challenges faced by the 21st century research library
Publication record and experience leading library research teams
A record of support for global research, teaching, and service
Demonstrated commitment to excellence in research and teaching
Experience with library facilities management and/or renovation projects
Demonstrated success with development activities, fundraising, and grants
Understanding of opportunities and challenges in health education and research
Commitment to and demonstrated success in the areas of professional service and activity
Demonstrated leadership at the national, regional, and state levels
Familiarity with program assessment methodologies
