The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Douglas!
What you will be doing:
This permanent seasonal position will serve as a crew leader on multiple remote field projects on the Taku River from early April through early October. Under the supervision of a Fisheries Biologist 1, and with oversight by staff biologists at the regional office, this position is a crew lead and assists with three primary salmon stock assessment projects on the Taku River:
- Juvenile Chinook and coho salmon smolt coded wire tagging project from early April through May.
- Adult Chinook salmon drift gillnet tagging project from late April through June.
- Adult salmon fish wheel tagging project from late April through early October.
The incumbent will assist in the setup, breakdown, and maintenance of remote camps, sampling supplies, boats, and tagging equipment. This position requires a high level of flexibility to adjust to changing priorities, schedules, and conditions to meet project goals and objectives. This will require the ability to effectively communicate with crew members and project leads and be competent with computers.

This position assists with an ongoing salmon stock assessment program on the Taku River in conjunction with the Pacific Salmon Treaty, Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Taku River Tlingit First Nation to provide high quality in season and post season data to fisheries managers which is essential to the accomplishment of project objectives, completion of treaty obligations, and maintaining a successful field camp.
The benefits of joining our team: The incumbent will have the opportunity to work with the Juneau area salmon research team to assist in highly important field projects in remote Southeast Alaska based out of the Taku River Smolt camp and Canyon Island fish wheel camp. This position provides on-the-river leadership experience while being part of a highly motivated crew of technicians generating information that benefits a sustainably managed transboundary fisheries by overseeing tagging operations and biological sampling of all five species of adult Pacific salmon found in Southeast Alaska as well as juvenile coho and Chinook salmon smolt.
The working environment you can expect: The position is stationed at the Douglas, Alaska ADF&G Region 1 office; however, work will primarily be conducted at two remote camps on the Taku River (both roughly two miles below the U.S./Canada border) from roughly early April through early October each season. This position’s duties require the incumbent to work from camp on the river for the duration of the field season where housing and food will be provided. A few breaks off the river throughout the season are encouraged and will be accommodated as much as possible. The incumbent will be expected to provide their own food, housing, and transportation while working in town.
Who we are looking for: - Experience living and working in a remote field setting for months at a time
- Knowledge and/or experience identifying, capturing, and sampling juvenile and adult salmon
- Experience leading small crews in the collection of biological data from live salmon and summarizing biological data in notebooks, data forms, and electronic spreadsheets
- Experience operating and maintaining small boats and outboard engines
- Knowledge and experience with the installation, maintenance, and breakdown of remote field camps
- Experience with basic carpentry practices and safe operation of common power tools
- Experience participating in logistical planning and outfitting of remote research field camp

- Work may involve exposure to wild animals, insects, and inclement weather.
- Transportation to the project site is provided from Juneau by float plane or a river skiff.
- Housing and food are provided while at the project site and field camp. Although this position is principally stationed in the field for the duration of the project, some duties will require work in Juneau/Douglas where housing and food are not provided.
- All department employees who carry a firearm are required to take the department’s basic firearm safety course and pass a proficiency test before going into the field. After successfully taking the course, an annual refresher course is required. If an employee does not want to take the course or carry a firearm in the field, they must use bear spray as a primary deterrent.
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.
Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife, or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.
Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
Special Note:
"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.
Fields of study comparable to fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture, biology, ichthyology, microbiology, ornithology, and zoology.
