Job description

Position Summary

This internship opportunity provides experience to a student exploring museum-related careers. The Registration Intern will be introduced to museum-registration practices including working with The Museum System (TMS) and cataloguing & handling objects. This position will have assigned projects to complete during the defined period of the internship and will participate in all aspects of the Registration department for broad exposure to the department's role in museum functions.

The duration of this internship is approximately 30 hours per week for 8-10 weeks. Start & end dates will be established by the candidate ultimately selected for the position, in conjunction with the Associate Registrar and/or Registrar. This opportunity is not a guarantee of future employment beyond the lifespan of the internship.

Reporting Relationship

This position reports to the Registrar and has frequent ongoing contact with Registration, Installation, and Curatorial departments.

Essential Functions

• Catalogue condition and properly house the Edmundson Archive's past exhibition files.
• Job shadow and assist the Registrar & Associate Registrar to gain an understanding of the Registration department, as well as museum operations, policies, and goals related to the collection and its care.

Other Responsibilities

• Acts in ways that reflect favorably on the Art Center and maintains professional standards in the quality of performance and demonstration of care & concern for the Art Center's collection, programs, and facilities. Adheres to Des Moines Art Center Code of Ethics, policy handbook, and all other organizational policies.

Required Education, Experience, and/or Professional Certification

Undergraduate or graduate level students pursuing a BA, MA, or MFA in art- or history-related fields of study

Additional Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Excellent organization, communication, and computer skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Demonstrated ability to work independent & collaboratively
• Professionalism in working with colleagues & various business associates

Decision Making

Participates in the day-to-day operational decision making of the Registration department, within the guidelines of established policies.

Special Considerations (Schedule, Work Environment, Physical Factors, Required Travel, etc.)

• Work is performed largely in an office environment, during normal business hours. Work outdoors may be required.
• Work is mostly sedentary or light work.
• Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amounts of force frequently to constantly to carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
• Corrected vision close to 20/20 is necessary to inspect & handle artworks and objects.
