THE OPPORTUNITY

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UT Southwestern) invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Psychiatry. This is an exceptional opportunity for a visionary and committed physician to lead a top-tier clinical department with a robust scientific impact and an innovative educational program across a diverse community and region. As a key leader at UT Southwestern, the new Chair will leverage the strengths of the Department’s clinical, research, and education missions to act as an advocate and champion for transformative psychiatric care and research in a rapidly growing and evolving landscape in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, the state of Texas, and beyond.

THE INSTITUTION

As one of the premier academic medical centers in the nation, UT Southwestern integrates pioneering research with exceptional health promotion, clinical care, and education. This public university is home to more than 3,400 faculty members, many of whom are leaders in their respective fields, including six Nobel laureates, 26 National Academy of Sciences members, 18 National Academy of Medicine members, and 14 Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigators. Annual research funding at the University exceeds $640 million per year. The University is currently experiencing unprecedented growth of its research capabilities, infrastructure, and clinical services, with significant investments being made across all domains of its teaching, clinical, and research missions. 

QUALIFICATIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS

The successful candidate will have an impressive record as a scholar, leader, and manager with considerable financial skills and demonstrated business acumen. They must bring the ability to attract talent and empower colleagues. While no candidate will embody every quality, the successful candidate will bring many of the following professional and personal qualifications:

· A medical degree and board certification in Psychiatry are required. Candidates should hold an MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree and be eligible to be licensed in Texas. Related experience commensurate with appointment at the rank of Professor;

· A history of progressively responsible and successful academic leadership in a complex university, research organization, or medical center; demonstrated track record of academic excellence and success in leading and building research and academic programs;

· Understanding of, and enthusiasm for, the tripartite mission of UT Southwestern, along with knowledge of the culture of academic medical institutions;

· A distinguished record of scholarly achievements as evidenced by both publications and a strong track record of extramural peer-reviewed research funding;

· Experience developing academic leaders and a reputation for mentorship of students and trainees and development of junior faculty;

· Good judgment in hiring and an eye for scientific excellence; demonstrated ability to identify, recruit, and retain strong faculty, residents, and fellows;

· A commitment to fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a faculty member at UT Southwestern;

· The ability to promote collaboration among researchers and clinicians from a wide variety of disciplines;

· Political savvy and ability to work well with people at all levels – university, hospital, community, faculty, and staff;

· Demonstrated managerial and business acumen. Experience in and demonstrated knowledge of the complex financial pressures facing academic medical centers, healthcare delivery organizations, and academic departments;

· Personal attributes conducive to success in a collaborative work environment including humility, persistence, patience, good humor, and flexibility;

· Demonstrated vision, a results-oriented approach, the highest level of integrity, and evidence of timely and principled decision-making.
