The SunZia Wind project represents over 3,500 MW of new renewable generation located in Torrance, Lincoln, and San Miguel Counties, New Mexico and will represent the largest wind project in the Western Hemisphere. SunZia Transmission is a 550-mile ± 525 kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line between central New Mexico and south-central Arizona, with the capacity to transport 3,000 MW of clean, renewable energy. Together, total investment of more than $8 billion and enough energy to power the needs of more than 3 million Americans. Both projects are privately funded and will deliver over $1 billion in estimated direct economic benefits to governments, communities, schools, and private landowners across Arizona and New Mexico.
Job Purpose
Provide oversight of construction activities onsite ensuring the facility is safely constructed in accordance with Pattern’s contract documents and specifications. Work with Pattern’s contractors and equipment suppliers to manage the activities and interface onsite between the various parties to ensure safe, quality, and timely execution of the project within the established budget. Report to the Pattern Project Manager in a timely manner on safety, quality, schedule, and cost throughout construction and assist in handover of the project to operations. Work as a liaison and effectively communicate between contractors, Pattern land team, landowners, Pattern development, consultants, and other project stakeholders.
Key Accountabilities
The key responsibilities will include as a minimum the following:
- Prioritize safety and quality and promote and support a strong safety culture across all activities among equipment suppliers and contractors on site.
- Develop a thorough understanding of all contracts between Pattern and its counterparties to ensure quality execution of the project.
- Provide direct interface with site management personnel representing the construction contractors and equipment suppliers. Coordinate communications between the equipment suppliers and other contractors on site.
- Track and identify interface points, effectively communicate responsibility, and manage the interaction between contractors and/or between contractors and Pattern’s contract obligations.
- Work with the Pattern Project Manager to oversee/manage site construction management firm representing Pattern’s interest on the project site.
- Issue daily, weekly, and monthly reports as required.
- Keep daily records of activities onsite and key interface discussions, agreements between Pattern’s counterparties.
- Act as the principal representative of Pattern on site and manage multiple stakeholders impacted by the construction activities including landowners, local community, local government, and environment.
- Maintain and track progress of the project schedule and coordinate directly with Pattern’s scheduling team or scheduling consultant.
- Remove construction roadblocks or unknowns well in advance to ensure construction schedule and progress is not impacted.
- The Pattern Manager of Site Construction is the principal representative of Pattern on the project site.
- Utilize Pattern’s project management controls software and work with counterparties to ensure they are utilizing the software.
- Work with Pattern technical support team to ensure the design and construction is in accordance with the various agreements and specifications.
- Support activities with the local utility to ensure interconnection occurs in a timely manner to support project schedule.
- Audit counterparties quality control procedures, documentation, and execution of the work to those procedures. Work with the Pattern Project Manager to issue Non-conformance Notices (NCN’s) and respond to Requests for Information (RFI’s) as required.
- Host site visitors, including project lenders, independent engineering firms, Pattern representatives, local government, and environmental representatives.
- Manage and track all infrastructure crossing agreements and permits, provide adequate and necessary notification, and ensure compliance with such agreements.
- Work with Pattern O&M team throughout the project to ensure smooth transition from construction to operations.
Experience / Qualifications /Education
Educational Experience
- Ten (10) years continuous leadership experience in the power industry with significant transmission, high-voltage equipment, and/or wind energy experience.
- Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or construction management, is desired or 15+ years of relevant experience in construction trades.
- Demonstrated ability to complete complex, large scale, multi-million-dollar construction projects on schedule and within budget. Field experience desirable.
Additional Requirements
- Willingness to relocate as required for each project site location.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize and resolve multiple issues on multiple projects under demanding schedule constraints.
- Thorough understanding of construction contract concepts, language, and terms.
- Knowledge of basic engineering concepts.
- Familiarity with transmission and distribution equipment, overhead and underground cable installation, reactive power compensation equipment, and SCADA systems helpful.
- Ability to adapt to and learn new systems related to geographic information systems (GIS) and document and information control systems.
Technical Skills
- Proficient with typical computer software (Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, and PowerPoint)
- Ability to use Microsoft Outlook or other email supported technology.
- Ability to read and comprehend construction documents such as Gantt chart schedules, technical drawings, contract documents and budgets.
The expected starting pay range for this role is $103,000 USD - $139,000 in local currency. This range is an estimate and base pay may be above or below the ranges based on several factors including but not limited to location, work experience, certifications, and education. In addition to base pay, Pattern’s compensation program includes a bonus structure for full-time employees of all levels.
