Job description
THE POSITION
The Vice President of Employee Relations is responsible for providing strategic as well as hands-on support to the business and the HR team in the areas of Employee Relations (ER), policy creation and training, and overall HR compliance to ensure Cogir is meeting all municipal, state, and federal employment-related requirements. In this role, you will lead ER investigations, compliance, management of investigations, and consultations, across multiple states. Reporting to the SVP of Human Resources, you will work closely with cross-functional and field stakeholders to develop a positive employee relations strategy. You will be the advocate for a positive employee experience and culture by building and implementing policies that are fair and consistent, coaching to address root cause issues, and proactively seeking out employee relations and compliance-related issues through onsite visits, direct coaching and education of our HR team members and business leaders.
Physical Setting:
In-person, in one of our 2 corporate offices in Sacramento CA, or Scottsdale AZ, with the ability to travel as needed. Schedule: Monday to Friday.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Employee Relations and Engagement - As the ER expert, work with local Cogir team members and communities to ensure a consistent and effective full-lifecycle employee experience that reflects Cogir's values.
- Compliance - Oversees employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations. Ensures that the formal disciplinary process is followed for compliance with internal HR policies and with state and federal law. C ontribute to unifying titles, career paths, roles, and responsibilities.
- Policies & Practices - Ensures Cogir's policies and practices comply with municipal, state, and federal laws.
- HR Leadership - Collaborates with senior leadership to understand the organization's business goals and strategy related to all HR functions. A ct as an expert advisor to HR team colleagues and point of escalation on compliance concerns, process gaps, and actions.
- Culture - Champion the company's culture, vision, and values ensuring they are represented in every initiative deployed and every message delivered. Support initiatives and create programs to continually improve Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Sustains HR programs that contribute to a climate of a highly engaged, skilled, and diverse workforce
- M&A - Contribute to the due diligence and integration planning of target properties/communities. Oversee acquisition integration and change management support for employees.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- A Juris Doctor degree.
- A minimum of 7 years of progressive Human Resources and/or legal experience, including significant experience in a position that requires knowledge and application of employment law and cultivating a positive employee work environment with a multi-state employer.
- Extensive knowledge and direct experience in all phases of employment law, especially in the state of California.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in employee relations, employee counseling, performance management, dispute resolution, negotiation strategy, and applicable employment laws.
- A demonstrated ability to lead complex negotiations.
- Cultural architect and positive change agent with exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with field or corporate partners.
- Strong analytical, oral presentation, and report-writing skills.
- Understanding of employment law implications on compliance issues and investigations and the ability to escalate to outside counsel for support as required.
- Experience with developing and delivering effective ER, Compliance presentations, and training material to a variety of audiences in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
- Demonstrated expertise in the use of creativity, initiative, and independent judgment to problem-solve effectively and efficiently and to produce desired outcomes
- Demonstrated commitment to implementing initiatives that can help managers foster a culture of inclusion.
- Demonstrated success in implementing employment practices, policies, and tools.
- Certification as a PHR (Professional in Human Resources), and/or SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources) certification or equivalent SHRM-SCP/CP is a plus.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive HR leadership experience at a senior level.
- Senior Housing, Hospitality, or Healthcare industry experience preferred.
- An energetic, organized, creative, and highly motivated person with the ability to learn and work independently and collaboratively.
- Strong work ethic and ability to support multiple projects in parallel and prioritize competing demands under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines
- Excellent interpersonal verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strength of character and flexible style to work successfully with a range of people. Has the personal presence to deal effectively with these constituencies
