Job description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE (BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO):

BARGE CLEANING AND STRIPPING OPERATIONS
• Identify cargo contained in barge set for cleaning
• Determine where cargo is to be transferred based on cargo type, amount, and available storage
• Work under chemical hygienist and marine chemist to test tanks for vapor toxicity and LELs to ensure that
levels are below the level required for safe entry
• Enter into the tanks of the barges to pump or rag out residual cargo
• Inspect barge ensuring it is cleaned to customer specifications
• Prepare the dock or facility side for loading/discharging liquid petroleum cargoes as per facility loading
instructions. This includes performing line-up of pipelines, opening/closing valves, and
connection/disconnection of transfer hoses and loading arms
• Connect and disconnect cargo hoses/loading arms to facilitate the safe transfer of liquid petroleum cargo
to/from the Vessel/Barge/Shore tank/Tank Truck
• Continuously monitor transfer utilizing float gauges, maintaining documentation of cargo transfer history,
vessel/shore communications, and various other transfer system components such as tank cars
• Acquire and fill out various required paperwork and reports relating to the transfer
• Continuously monitors and document the volume of product moving between vessel(s) and shore keeping
all involved parties informed of the transfer status
• Monitor cargo tank capacities
• Operate equipment for the recovery of vapors during cargo transfer when required
• Light and operate vapor combustor
• Perform gauging and sampling duties and assists company personnel, inspectors, product samplers and
dock supervisors as needed
• Ability to use firefighting equipment and spill containment equipment

FACILITY MAINTENANCE
• Upkeep and repair of pumps used to transfer cargo
• Inspection of hoses for wear and failures
• Inspection of tanks and truck rack
• Inspect rainwater for clarity and discharge

JANITORIAL DUTIES
• Clean the bathroom in office
• General cleaning around office
• Cleaning around the grounds

DRIVE A COMPANY VEHICLE / MAKE DELIVERIES AS NEEDED
• All Kirby employees who have the possibility of driving a Kirby vehicle must complete defensive driving
when required
• Upkeep of Kirby vehicles including fueling, general maintenance, and washing

SECURITY RESPONSIBILITIES
• PICs will be required to be familiarized with and understand the cleaning facility security requirements
• PICs are responsible for continuous monitoring of security concerns:
o Logging in contract workers, truck delivery drivers, and Kirby personnel
o Vehicle and facility screening for suspicious cargo
o Barge inspections for suspicious items
o Monitoring the access gate and granting people entry.

SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Ability to work with a certified industrial hygienist and marine chemist
• Ability to operate, calibrate and log information using the gas monitor
• Be trained in the use of all necessary Personal Protective Equipment. The job requires use of a respirator on a
daily basis (NO FACIAL HAIR)
• Follow all safety requirements and training as required by Kirby and the Supervisors

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS
• Ability to lift and carry 75 pounds up to 300 feet
• Basic Verbal communication skills:
o Ability to communicate start and stop times with dispatchers
o Ability to conduct verbal questioning for security purposes
o Ability to communicate with industrial hygienists and marine chemist
• Basic writing skills:
o Be able to write legibly in English
o Fill out forms and logs for inspections and record keeping
• Ability to follow directions from Facility supervisors, Industrial Hygienists, and marine chemist
• Must adhere to all Company policies
• Must remain drug and alcohol-free at all times while on Kirby property or during the course and scope of
company business

QUALIFICATIONS, COMPETENCIES, AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
• High school diploma or GED preferred
• Must pass physical designed to test for the ability to work in conditions specific to this job
• Ability to drive company vehicles (Valid Texas driver’s license required)

Physical Requirements
• Walking with and/or carrying tools while crossing pipes, ledges, sills, catwalks, and/or climbing ladders and
gangways, 10-50 lbs., distances up to 150 feet
• Walking over and or on uneven surfaces; slippery or uneven footing
• Lifting from the floor, 0-40 lbs.
• Lifting heavy bulky objects, 0-80 lbs.
• Lifting heavy weights, 0-45 lbs.
• Lifting from knuckle to chest height, 0-50 lbs.
• Lifting from floor to above shoulder height, 0-40 lbs.
• Bending, stretching, twisting, and reaching out, 0-50 lbs.
• Pushing, and pulling loads/cables/lines/ropes over 5 - 10 feet, 50lbs of torque
• Carrying objects/weights for distances up to 15’, 0-45 lbs., and potentially slippery/uneven surfaces
• Balancing on uneven surfaces while carrying a load, 10 lbs. tool bags/hose slings
• Ladder climbing – 2-12 feet
• Stair/Gangway climbing – 2-50 feet with load (max 45-degree incline), 10 lbs.
• Turn valves - small diameter, large diameter while reaching, the medium force required
• Tightening nuts/bolts (singly and simultaneously with both hands), medium force required
• Turning Valve Wheels (2 hands used), the medium force required
• Enter/exit stairways and gangways (agility, balance)
• Wearing required PPE while performing any task above. (I.e. respirators, goggles, etc.)
• Proper use and fit of respirator or self-contained breathing apparatus
• Temperature extremes (environmental)
• Vision adequate for minimum or very dim light (environmental and nighttime work)
• Hear verbal commands/both ears/> 10 ft. distance/noise levels, noise >85 dB TWA ear protection
required
• Dust, fumes, vapors, gases, particulates (environmental and chemical)

Working Schedule and Conditions: Work a rotating schedule which includes day & night shifts.
• 12 hours per shift. 7 days on, then 3 days off, then 7 nights on 4 days off
• Additional hours may be required to cover absentee workers
• Conditions can cover many extremes including extreme heat/cold, rain sleet ice and snow, confined spaces and/or
exposure to chemicals at safe levels
