The Senior Clinical Technologist instructs students and new staff in clinical techniques and assists in the administrative management of one or more clinical areas. Employees typically analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities. Primary activities and decision making authority are predominantly performed independently affecting business operations to a substantial degree.

Responsibilities *

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

The Clinical Technologist Senior for the Susceptibility area plans and implements special, complex procedures for use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, along with assisting in the establishment and maintenance of quality control standards.

In addition to performing the duties of a medical technologist at a high level of expertise, and with assistance from Medical Technologist Specialists, the Senior Clinical Technologist is normally responsible for, and oversees the susceptibility activities.

Technical Lead:

  1. Provide day-to-day technical supervision of qualified personnel performing testing and reporting high complexity test results in susceptibility.

  2. Responsible for reviewing procedures and policies no less than biennially within the document management system. This includes modifying, and archiving. Final approval for any new or revised document is completed by the CLIA Laboratory Director.

  3. Provides advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, interpretation, consultation,and verification of test results. Acts as technical adviser/expert for susceptibility testing.

  4. Assist in the development and implementation of new protocols and selection of new equipment.

  5. Performs validation of equipment, analyzers, and tests in area of expertise.

QC/QA/Compliance

  1. Monitor, organize, maintain Quality control and Quality Assurance Records. Ensure that quality assurance and control is being performed in a timely manner. Maintains all QA/QC records.

  2. Review Quality Control and instrument function reports to ensure that acceptable levels of analytical performance are maintained.

  3. Monitors instrument maintenance, repair, and calibration in area of expertise

  4. Assists in preparation for CAP inspections.

  5. Submits PT surveys and performs summary review, along with review with testing personnel.

Training/Competency

  1. Assess training competency of new employees, initially, and after 6 months. Performs annual evaluation.

  2. Conduct training competencies for all new test methods or new equipment

  3. Distribute proficiency testing among employees, in area of expertise.

Perform Testing

Maintain expertise/competency in all areas related to the area of expertise.

Professional Development

Fulfill departmental continuing education requirement.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Organize and maintain accurate quality control records.

  2. Review, update, and write procedures for Molecular Microbiology.

  3. Investigate quality assurance issues and respond to change in requirements.

  4. Notify vendors for repairs or preventive maintenance and maintain equipment in the area.

  5. Utilize pathology department information and data systems.

  1. Train employees and teach Medical Technology students, Pathology Residents, new hires, and High School students, good microbiology skills.

  2. Perform clinical testing, in the area, of bacteriology, anaerobes, and susceptibility testing.

  3. Assess and document competency, remediate if necessary.

  4. Evaluate new tests and/or methods.

  5. Prepare area for inspection by accrediting agencies.

  6. Communicate with clinicians and assume responsibility in the absence of the supervisor.

Required Qualifications *

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

Desired Qualifications *

Work Schedule

This full time, Exempt, 40 hour position is on the day shift and will require rotating weekends, holidays and on call work schedule. Candidate will typically receive an average of 16 hours/week (40%) to accomplish the extra duties. This will vary at the scheduling supervisor's/manager's discretion based on the amount of senior clinical work pending, and patient work or other project that must be completed.
