Job description

The Optical Engineering Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory develops and prototypes novel optical systems for terrestrial, air and space borne applications. The Group applies innovative solutions to achieve performance for complex systems in challenging conditions. The Group consists of more than 35 professionals with diverse expertise and skill sets covering concept development through detailed design, analysis, assembly, alignment, and comprehensive testing.  Recently the Group has been involved in optical payload development efforts for satellite imaging systems, space and ground laser communications systems, airborne laser imaging and spectroscopic systems on both manned and unmanned aircraft, and high energy laser optical systems.

Job Description

Summer Intern Optical Specialist (8-12 weeks):

As a summer intern in the Optical Engineering Group you will be mentored by experienced staff members while working on skills applicable to a broad range of prototype systems, including (but not limited to) optical assembly, alignment and testing.  We are seeking candidates who are comfortable working with optical hardware and/or test equipment, enjoy working in teams, and are eager to learn in a creative and experiential manner.

Requirements :

-Enrolled in a qualified Optical Technology career program, and have completed at least one year.
-Demonstrated experience working in teams, excellent communication skills, and the ability to document your work and follow written procedures.  
-Be comfortable handling optics and working with common optical-mechanical hardware.
-Have used some optical tooling (interferometers, alignment scopes, profilometers, inspection microscopes, and/or theodolites).
-Have familiarity with optical fabrication techniques and specifications.
-Must be a U.S. citizen, due to the unique nature of our work.

Selected candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation and must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level DoD security clearance.
