Job description
The Controller is a part of the Business Office team who reports to the Chief Financial & Operations Officer, and is responsible for assisting with the oversight, organization, and implementation of all general ledger functions and maintaining proper internal control procedures. The Controller also oversees the functions of accounting in a supervisory role.
Essential Functions:
General Accounting
- Reconciles accounting transactions for, Advancement, and Business Office records, payroll, and bank accounts.
- Assists the CFOO in the preparation and monitoring of department budgets and forecasts working with administrators and department heads concerning budget deficits, etc.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and year-end journal entries as part of the monthly close cycle.
- Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements and reports.
- Oversee and review the preparation of cash flow reports and projections and monitors cash balances.
- Coordinate year-end financial statements; prepare schedules and provide support to auditors throughout the audits.
- Compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare entries to general ledger accounts and documents transactions.
- Lead, mentor, and oversee accounting team members, and ensure efficient operations of accounts payable, receivables, payroll, cash management, endowment, fixed assets reporting and overall general ledger transactions.
- Review, recommend, and implement financial policies and procedures that enhance efficiency and compliance.
- Maintain a schedule of fixed assets including historic assets, capital acquisitions, and depreciation expenses.
Other Functions
- Plan, oversee, and facilitate the School’s annual audits and tax filings including:
- Schedules for all audits including the annual financial statements and 990s.
- Pension reporting and compliance (Form 5500, plan updates and amendments, etc.)
- Ensure that the operation of the Business Office is in compliance with State and Federal regulations, operating within all applicable accounting principles and standards in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the Financial Accounting Services Board (FASB).
- Assist with financial analysis and accurate modeling to produce strategic financial planning for on-going and new initiatives.
- Assist with the presentation and reporting of financials for board meetings.
- Ad- hoc projects and analysis as necessary.
Skills, Qualifications, Experience
- Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in the management of accounting operations sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
- A bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field; CPA or MBA is preferred.
- Experience within an educational or similar non-profit environment is preferred.
- Strong use of Excel for accounting, spreadsheet, and database. Knowledge of Blackbaud is a plus
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written
- Detail-oriented, flexible and organized worker with initiative and ability to work independently and adjust priorities to meet changing deadlines
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
