Baystate Health, western Massachusetts’s premier healthcare provider, and home to Baystate Medical Center (BMC), a Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence is looking for a Holistic Nurse Educator .

Position Priorities

The Holistic Nurse Educator (HNE) promotes both patient and staff well-being by supporting a healing environment and utilizing care techniques to support the body’s innate healing potential using Kristen Swanson’s Theory of Caring. The HNE promotes wellness initiatives and provides mindfulness, listening circles, stress management, M© technique, reiki, breathing exercises and other therapeutic interventions to both patients and staff on a consultative basis. The HNE facilitates the Integrative Healing Arts Council and provides education on holistic health to the healthcare team and promotes the use of those practices to our patients. The HNE collects data pertaining to program activities and outcomes and participates in research initiatives associated with the program.



The Holistic Nurse Educator reports to the Program Director of Research and Holistic Nursing and works closely with the Manager of Spiritual Services to provide education to nurses and support staff on various holistic modalities including the development of an internal holistic training program for nurses and support staff.

Job Requirements

Provision of Care: Provides compassionate and authentic presence to patients and staff by creating a trusting relationship through active listening. The HNE honors the patient's and/or staff members belief system and enables them to expand their own sense of faith/hope and actively listens by focusing on the person, fully in mind, body, and spirit. The HNE promotes mental and spiritual health and provides individualized care to patients and staff by learning about their needs, beliefs, and priorities.

Nursing Practice Assessment: Performs a holistic assessment of patients according to program standards and demonstrates critical thinking skills necessary to develop and implement individualized plan of integrative care, in collaboration with the healthcare team.

Clinical Competencies: Demonstrates understanding and can verbalize principles of holistic nursing and use those in their daily practice.

Patient Education: Provides culturally sensitive, age-specific, and clinically appropriate patient and family education on the various holistic modalities.

Staff/Provider Education : Participates in the education of staff, other health professionals, patients, families, and the community regarding the role of holistic nursing, integrative care, and general wellness. Develops and sustains the Holistic Educational Program for staff.

Documentation: Communicates pertinent patient information to appropriate healthcare professionals responsible for the clinical care of patient. Accurately documents assessment and integrative intervention in the medical record, in accordance with the standards and requirements of the BMC and other governing organizations.

Consultation/collaboration: Shares information regarding patient/family assessment with other members of the health care team; uses interdisciplinary resources to enhance a healing environment.

Collaboration: Plans, coordinates, and collaborates with other team members in the development and implementation of effective staff and patient education and patient care programs in holistic healing.

Service Excellence: Demonstrates leadership and organizational skills necessary to ensure effective functioning of the program.

Teamwork: Actively promotes harmonious interpersonal relationships within the team; understands the need for and contributes to an effectively functioning team; effectively shares knowledge with colleagues; demonstrates adaptability in responding to changes in workload and assignments; places team goals above own interest. Participates in the orientation of new staff members, students, and others as appropriate.
