Job description
SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Mechanical Designer-Field Support Specialist is responsible for designing mechanical fixtures and bracketry for packaging program and provides internal and external technical support with packaging machines and tape applicators.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Associate degree or equivalent experience
- 15+ years of experience in technical discipline, maintenance or machining environment
- 2D/3D CAD Drawing Skills (AutoCAD, Solid Works or equivalent)
- Strong mathematical aptitude and analytical skills with the ability to translate, calculate, interpret, and communicate technical data relative to packaging materials, excellent numerical and measurement skills (English/Metric systems, statistics), and understanding of Geometry
- Proficient operation and knowledge of milling machines, drill presses, lathes, surface grinders, and other automated machine tools
- Familiarity of packaging material and equipment (corrugated boxes, cartons, case erecting and sealing equipment, tape application to include previous work experience within these product groups)
- Strong Mechanical aptitude including the ability to read and interpret blue prints to assemble and disassemble mechanical devices with the assistance of hand tools
- Knowledge of Programmable Logic Control (PLC) programming including Rockwell Automation and/or Yaskawa control systems language
- PC proficient (Windows NT, Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint, Adobe)
- Ability to work independently or in a team setting effectively
- Excellent problem-solving skills including creativity and attention to detail
- Ability prioritize independently with minimal direction and demonstrates initiative and good work ethic
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and exceptional interpersonal skills colleagues.

- Dexterity and ability to operate machining and hand tools
- Ability to position and lift 50 pounds
- Ability to talk on the phone and perform repetitive hand motions for extended periods
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
- Less than 50% travel required within US, Canada, and northern Mexico

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Design from concept simple and complex mounting bracketry for packaging demonstrations and installs including creating Bill of Materials as required for assembly
- Document concepts by using 2D/3D CAD drawings
- Fabricate prototype mounting bracketry using common machine shop equipment
- Facilitate the procurement of prototype bracketry and special fixtures with external machine shops and vendors
- Maintain Machine Matrix by documenting and maintaining assembly guides for internal and external customers
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting at customer locations in conjunction with the ShurSEAL program as well as packaging equipment
- Facilitates technical support for of Packaging Machines and acts as liaison with machine vendor on PLC programing issues and provide technical troubleshooting and training to internal and external customers
- Perform periodic field service and training for the packaging program for plant evaluations, demonstrations, installations, and after-market service as required
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation and a well-organized workspace
