General Statement of Duties

Closing Date: This position closes on Monday, April 1, 2024.
The Technician's general duties are to assist in the daily activities of the county's arboviral vector surveillance, monitoring and control program in an hourly capacity. This involves training and leading new seasonal employees, the inspection of potential mosquito sources, application of control measures in compliance with State laws, responding to citizen standing water and drainage complaints if needed and providing excellent customer service. This is a seasonal position through the end of October.

Essential Duties

General knowledge of mosquito biology; knowledge of pesticide application practices, as they apply to mosquito control; ability to read maps and locate geographically dispersed monitoring sites by vehicle; ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to work effectively with the general public; capable of extensive record keeping, documentation and database management; experience using Geographic Information System (GIS) is desirable; ability to express oneself clearly, orally and in writing; physical condition that permits one to perform activities including but not limited to: walking long distances, climbing, bending, driving and working in adverse weather conditions.
Ability to acquire certification as a VA Certified Pesticide Applicator, Registered Technician, from the State of Virginia.
Additional Details/Examples of Work: assists in adult mosquito surveillance, independent trap setup and retrieval; mosquito identification using a microscope; manages in-house testing of mosquitoes using the RAMP West Nile Virus Test; performs field inspections for the detection, control and prevention of mosquitoes; inspects public and private properties for mosquito breeding sources; applies pesticides as necessary using a variety of hand tools; operates vehicles and truck-mounted sprayers for use in treating county right-of-way for the effective control of mosquito larvae; maintains necessary records: performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or current enrollment in Biology, Environmental Science, Entomology, Hydrology or other related subject is preferred.
Possession of a two (2)-year associate's degree in a related engineering discipline and three (3) years of related paraprofessional engineering experience; OR , any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Additional Information

Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the State of Virginia and must have a good driving record.
A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee.
This is an hourly position and hours will not exceed 29 hours per week.
