Job Description and Duties

Do you love the outdoors and have an aptitude for fisheries conservation work? Come join the Department of Fish and Wildlife working to rescue Salmon, Steelhead and Sturgeon in the North Central Region.

This position will help to rescue and relocate juvenile and adult, State and Federally listed species that include Sacramento River winter-run Chinook Salmon, Central Valley spring-run Chinook salmon,Central Valley Steelhead and North American Green Sturgeon in and around the Yolo Bypass including Fremont, Sacramento, and Tisdale weirs as well as Wallace Weir Fish Rescue Facility.

This position supports ongoing seasonal fish collection efforts through safely operating and maintaining trapping equipment as well as performing inspections, maintenance, repair, fabrication on vehicles, vessels, trailers, and facility equipment. Essential functions will include; collection facility operations, handling fish to minimize stress, transportation of fish, project coordination and regular scheduled maintenance.

In order to be eligible for this position, you must either be transfer eligible or take and pass the following exam:


Fish and Wildlife Technician:  Exam Link This position is a 12 month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

If you currently have permanent status in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment. If you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status, you will be separated from state service.

During this 12-month Limited Term assignment, you will receive full health, dental, and vision benefits! You will also earn State Service and accrue monthly leave credits.

Working Conditions

Will work outdoors in all kinds of weather, around water and uneven ground. Position will be required to work a 7-40 schedule working unusual hours, weekends and holidays.


Position will report to the North Central Region Headquarters office at 1701 Nimbus Road, Rancho Cordova but will spend the majority of time in the field, generally at the Wallace Weir Fish Rescue Facility.

Position will require wearing a uniform.

Special Requirements

Perform a variety of skilled/ semi-skilled, construction work; must be able to lift 40 lbs; swim 50 yards; act as a lead over seasonal staff. Must be able to safely handle and work-up fish.


Ability to tow/back trailers is a must.

Knowledge of: methods, materials and equipment used in California's Fisheries and Wildlife management; methods of tagging, measuring, collecting samples from, and transporting fish; construction and maintenance work involved in making, installing and repairing fish screens, traps and ladders; recognition and control of fish disease and parasites; general power tools, welding, carpentry, concrete work and painting; operation of equipment such as trucks, fish pumps and small engines.

Skill to: apply principles and practices of conducting a compliance monitoring program in coordination with other Department staff and water agencies and managers.

Ability to: communicate effectively; follow oral and written instructions; prepare simple reports and maintain simple records; establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted while at work; analyze situations and take effective action.
