Project Overview:
Bechtel is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington State. The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant will use vitrification technology to process and solidify 56 million gallons (210 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford site, which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era.
The project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE’s most technically challenging cleanup projects. Its construction spans 65 acres (26 hectares) with four major nuclear facilities – Pretreatment, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification, High-Level Waste Vitrification and Analytical Laboratory – as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, other support facilities.
This position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) and works a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Selected applicant needs to be able and willing to work weekends as needed.

The Waste Treatment Completion Company (WTCC) is a limited liability corporation created by Bechtel National Inc. (BNI) and Amentum. WTCC is a subcontractor to BNI, the prime contractor, to deliver the construction, turnover, startup, and commissioning activities for the WTP project.
Position Summary:
The Mechanical Superintendent is assigned to the field construction organization in a supervisory capacity. Responsible for supervising and directing operations within the mechanical/piping discipline, including site fabrication and installation of all equipment and machinery installations. Supervises and directs craft activities, subordinate superintendents, and others, as assigned. Ensures assigned construction operations and subcontractors’ performance comply with specifications and within schedules and budget. Performs general functions inherent in all supervisory field positions. This position shall be performed under the day-to-day direction, control, and supervision of WTCC.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate with the various discipline Superintendents, General Foreman and Foreman to determine project priorities, and control field work -Perform all field discipline activities in accordance with Bechtel SWPPs & Safety Core Processes.
- Establish manpower needs, prepare craft requisitions, tools, equipment and material requirements for the assigned craft.
- Develop daily craft assignments to be performed, supervise in-process activities, and review work accomplished.
- Prepare short and long-term schedules, interface with other discipline superintendents and field engineers.
- Supervise and direct subordinate personnel and craft in construction activities within the mechanical discipline.
- Develop mechanical handling installation plans and forecasts - Monitor actual work performance compared to the project budget and schedule.
- Coordinate activities with other disciplines as instructed by construction management.
- Ensure the most current design documentation is being utilized to complete activities.
- Coordinate subcontractor labor supervision and craft distribution as required.
- Interface with Labor/Industrial Relations for craft recruitment and training programs.
- Provide active leadership for the safety, accident prevention, and fire prevention programs on the project.
Qualifications and Skills
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction, or a related subject from an accredited university and 9+ years of Field Engineering or related experience or, in lieu of a degree, 15+ years of directly related experience. Extensive mechanical field installation experience within a power or heavy industrial environment.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise, planning and scheduling experience.
- 5 or more years' experience in utilizing precision optics or laser tracker equipment in the installation of large industrial equipment.
- Experience with infield machining.
- Position will oversee the installation of complex shielding door drive systems, robotic manipulators and heavy shield doors.
- Demonstrated knowledge of, reading & interpreting and working to: - Mechanical and Piping design drawings (isometric and orthographic), design guides, specifications.
- Mechanical Support Drawings and specifications and maintain, promote, and cultivate a safe work ethic and positive work environment within the craft.
- Able to work extended work schedules and night shift as required to support the project execution plans and schedules.
- Must have work authorization within the United States of America.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical, and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
- Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site.
- Must possess the right to work and remain in the US without sponsorship.
- Basic Field Manual and/or Non-Manual supervision experience with a strong piping/mechanical background.
- Experience in Construction Project Planning and Scheduling.
- Knowledge of Construction Quality Assurance.
- Knowledge of a single or multi discipline construction or engineering operations.
- Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to field activities.
- Working knowledge of unionized labor.
- Demonstrated leadership in a team-based environment.
- Familiarity with current industry quality standards.
- Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheet, and technical database applications.
- Experience with lock-out/tag-out requirements and processes.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of project-specific environmental compliance requirements.
- Possess Nuclear Construction knowledge and experience including a commitment to a Nuclear Safety and Quality Culture.
- Knowledge of Bechtel’s Zero Accident Safety Program and familiar with current industry safety standards.
- Knowledge and experience of the ISMS guiding principles and core functions.
- Experience in safety compliance and familiar with Bechtel processes and procedures.
