Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) provides the educational outreach functions for Cornell University's role as New York State's Land Grant University. The Cornell Vegetable Program (CVP) is one of the premier agricultural extension programs in New York, serving a large multi-county region in the Central and Western parts of the state. The team's Vegetable Specialists work with Cornell faculty and extension educators statewide to address the issues impacting the vegetable industry.
What You Will Do
As the Temporary Onion Scout, scout onion fields to document crop stage, species, size, and density of weeds. Visually assess crop injury and follow established procedures to document and quantify the occurrence of insect pests and diseases. Accurately collect, record, and summarize field data from scouting fields and occasionally from research, and demonstration projects.
Other duties include:
Travel individually or with team members to vegetable farms within a multi-county region.
Maintain accurate and detailed field notes and data.
Set up Excel spreadsheets and enter data.
Communicate with growers via text to ensure that pesticides will not be applied in the fields that need to be scouted that day.
Occasionally, assist with crop harvests, measuring, and recording yields.
Occasionally, assist in logistical set-up for educational meetings and events.
What We Need
We are looking for someone with an excellent work ethic, who appreciates agriculture, and can work in commercial fields that have been sprayed with pesticides. We need a talented individual with excellent communication skills who builds and maintains effective relationships with multiple stakeholders. Additionally, we need someone who has the following:
High School diploma and 6+ months of experience in agriculture, field biology, ecology, or a similar setting, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be able to meet the travel requirements of the position, and have reliable transportation as well as have and maintain a valid and unrestricted New York State driver's license.
Visual concentration and attention to detail are needed to detect pests and pest damage.
Able to work independently in collecting and summarizing data.
Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather.
Must be able to tolerate stooping/squatting for long periods, some navigation of uneven terrain, etc.
Experience utilizing current computer technology.
Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.
Proven experience in communicating effectively, both written and oral.

If you possess these experiences and skills, this may be the role for you! There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, including:
Experience working with plants, plant disease and other pest identification.
Coursework or other practical experience in vegetable production, entomology, plant pathology, weed science, horticulture, agronomy, field biology, or natural resources/ecology.
The part-time position (19 hours/week) is available from June 1 through August 30 (13 weeks). There may be flexibility with start and end dates. Occasional evening hours may be scheduled to complete data collection or support educational meetings.
This position will require regular travel throughout Oswego and/or Wayne Counties. Onion fields to be scouted are located near Oswego, Fulton and Pine Island in Oswego County and near Fairville, Sodus, Marion and Wolcott in Wayne County. Computer work will be remote (laptop provided). Data entry will be completed from home within New York State.
Compensation is $18.50/hour.
