About the Department/College

The Department of Teaching and Learning at Northern Arizona University provides education programs to prepare pre-service teachers and support in-service teachers to be competent and committed professionals who will make positive differences in the lives of children and young adults. With over 10 programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels preparing educators, the department is also engaged in innovative international partnerships. As part of our offerings in Shanghai China, we offer a Bachelor of Applied Science in Early Childhood and a Bachelor of Science in Education in the Learning and Pedagogy program.

The NAU/Tianhua 4+0 Dual Degree-Seeking program was established in the fall of 2022. Students enrolled in this program study in China for all four years, completing a curriculum co-developed by both institutions. Approximately one-third of their instruction (43 credits) is provided by the NAU College of Education. Successful completion of the coursework from both universities grants students a bachelor's degree from each institution. Therefore, the department is seeking a full-time faculty member who is willing to teach our courses on the Tianhua College Campus in Shanghai, China.

About the Position

The Department of Teaching & Learning at Northern Arizona University invites applications for a non-tenure-track, teaching faculty position in Elementary Education. This is a non-tenure track, teaching faculty position located on the NAU Flagstaff campus with required travel and teaching assignments in Shanghai, China starting in August, 2024. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate Elementary Education courses and other curriculum and instruction courses, supervise practicum, advise students, maintain a strong personal program of service, assist with accreditation efforts, attend and participate in departmental and college events, and participate in the development of field-based Elementary Education programs.

This position is teaching focused and is expected to be continuing with potential for promotion. Renewal is contingent upon successful completion of a probationary year, effective performance, continued funding, and department needs. The teaching load is 4-4 for the academic year. The successful candidate is also expected to travel to China to teach at time intervals to be determined by program needs and agreed upon with the department chair. Travel to China as well as lodging costs while in China are covered.

Responsibilities Include:

• Providing instruction in a variety of undergraduate courses in Elementary Education
• Engaging in Curriculum renewal and quality assurance for the program
• Contributes to collaborative relationship building with Tianhua College and NAU
• Coordinates pre-service and in-service teacher workshops.
• Mentors undergraduate and graduate students in Elementary Education
• Promotes a diverse, inclusive environment.

This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.

This is a full time, non-tenure track faculty position, starting August 2024.

Minimum Qualifications

• The Lecturer position rank requires an earned master's degree.
• The Assistant Teaching Professor rank requires a doctoral degree by the date of hire in Elementary Education, or a related field.
• Three years teaching experience (Kindergarten through 8th grade).

Preferred Qualifications

• Doctoral Degree in Elementary Education or related field.
• Three to five years teaching experience (Kindergarten through 8th grade).
• Nationally Board-Certified Teacher/Elementary.
• Experience with multiple age groups (Kindergarten through 8th grade).
• Knowledge of best teaching practices/models for Elementary Education K-8.
• Online teaching experience.
• Higher education experience related to Elementary Education.
• Experience teaching adult learners.
• Experience teaching students in other countries.
• Experience working collaboratively with agencies, school districts, college faculty and adult learners.
• Demonstrated expertise through graduate course work and experience in all aspects of Elementary Education.
• Experience working with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
• Experience teaching in a diverse, multi-cultural setting.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election.
