Job description

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona  invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in the Department of Political Science .    Cal Poly Pomona is one of two polytechnic universities in the 23-campus  California State University system and among 11 such institutions nationwide. Since its founding in 1938, Cal Poly Pomona students participate in an integrative experiential learning education that is inclusive, relevant, and values diverse perspectives and experiences. With a variety of degree programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, engineering, and professional disciplines, the university is well known for its learn-by-doing approach and  Teacher Scholar Model.

The university is noted for its scenic and historic 1,400-acre campus, which was once the winter ranch of cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg. We acknowledge that Cal Poly Pomona resides on the territorial and homelands of the Tongva and Tataavium people who are the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar. The university's nearly 30,000 students are taught and mentored by the campus's more than 1,400 faculty as part of 54 baccalaureate and 29 master's degree programs, 11 credential and certificate programs, and a doctorate in educational leadership. 

The Cal Poly Pomona campus is located less than 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles at the intersection of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Student Population.   California residents comprise the majority (96%) of applicants to undergraduate programs at Cal Poly Pomona – nearly half (49%) of new students were transfers in Fall 2020.  58% of Cal Poly Pomona students are first generation, 70% receive financial aid, and 44% qualify as Pell-eligible.  The university enrolls a diverse student body that identifies as 49% Latinx, 21% Asian, 15% White, 3% Black, 5% International, 3% two or more races, 3% unknown, and less than 1% Native Hawaiian or Native Pacific Islander, and less than 1% Native American Indigenous. 39% of the student body were STEM majors with the top enrolled programs including psychology, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, biology and computer science.

Department 

The Political Science Department in the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences at Cal Poly Pomona invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor for appointment beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year specializing in Political Theory. Sixty percent of our majors are first generation and 70% identify with a minoritized group. The major enrolls a diverse student body that identifies as 64% Latinx, 14% White, 8% Asian, 5% Black, 3% two or more races, 3% international, 3% unknown, and less than 1% Native Hawaiian or Native Pacific Islander. 

The new faculty member will be a part of the Ethnic Studies Affinity Faculty and will have the opportunity to engage with a new and permanent Office of Ethnic Studies Affinity Teaching and Scholarship.  This is a space for collaboration across disciplines and methodological vantage points, mentorship, and professional development programming.  The Ethnic Studies Affinity Faculty, and the resources to support them, are a key element of CPP's ongoing efforts to ensure the flourishing of our diverse students and faculty and be the leading inclusive polytechnic university in the nation.  

The Position: 

The faculty member will be part of a collegial Political Science Department that grants both B.A. degrees and M.P.A. (Master's in Public Administration) degrees. The position requires excellence in teaching and advising, professional and scholarly achievements, and a commitment to service to the university. Applicants whose work demonstrates a commitment to inclusive excellence and diversity in higher education are particularly encouraged to apply. Cal Poly Pomona is a Hispanic-serving institution, and the faculty member will be an advisor to many under-represented minorities and first-generation college students.  

The faculty member will have a teaching and scholarly expertise that emphasizes critical approaches to political theory with a specialized knowledge in one or more of the four historically racialized groups: Native Americans, African Americans, Latina/o Americans, and/or Asian Americans. The faculty member will be expected to teach a general education course that meets the university requirement for Ethnic Studies, and in addition, contribute to teaching the following list of courses: Contemporary Political Thought, Modern Political Thought, American Political Thought, and/or Environmental Political Thought. A faculty member could potentially demonstrate a teaching and scholarly interest in one or more of the following areas: labor; political and racial violence; social movements and political resistance; post-colonial theory; de-colonization and settler-colonialism; environmental justice; intersectional feminist and queer theory. The department also welcomes the new faculty member to introduce new courses based on their area of scholarly interest (e.g. post-colonial theory, Black feminist theory, queer of color critiques) to contribute to the university's Ethnic Studies General Education curriculum.

Research interests related to social or racial justice, gender inequities, and/or inequality would be a plus. Additionally, preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate the ability to mentor and advise under-served populations including, but not limited to, African-American, Hispanic, and Native American students.
